It's just a cut-and-paste URL from my browser. The referral link is probably from the Enhanced Steam extension which directed me to the Amazon page from steam.

In fairness, it is probably from isthereanydeal.com and anyone who doesn't check this website or similar first is very naive to think steam ever gives you the best price.

I was a big fan of steam sales but looking at their current sale, I have bought every game I want for considerably less than what they have offered so far (think far cry 3, bioshock infinite etc).

It may be a referral link but these sites should be supported, given they are ad free and save you a considerable amount of money compared to what you would get if you just relied on steam alone e.g. istheranydeal allows you to set up a waitlist that will email you whenever a game you have added drops below a certain point you have decided, steam will email you if a game on your wishlist has 5% off.

With regards the original point I have bought many games off Amazon with no problem, i.e. Far Cry 3 but apparently it can be game dependent.

Hi farna_boy, thanks for that info. When you bought Far Cry 3 from Amazon, did you buy the Steam version? For that game, it looks like Amazon offers a regular download and a Steam DRM download.
    http://www.amazon.com/Far-Cry-Online-Game-Code/dp/B00B29S1JK/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1388487286&sr=8-2&keywords=far+cry+3
My guess is that a Steam key download from Amazon would work anywhere, but the regular download won't. It says the game will be accessible from your Amazon "Your Games Library" after download. It sounds like the DRM is done by Amazon in that case.

Amazon always seem to provide a download link in addition to the key, even when games are Steam only. Provided that the description says Steam, you will find a Steam key in your Amazon games library.

If you use http://steamdb.info/ you can see if the wanted game has an NA steam key. If it does, there is a risk that the game could be Steam region locked.

When I bought the game, it just got added to my amazon library. There is an option in there to view the steam key and I just used that to add it to my steam library.

From what I understand you are completely correct. The only exception I've seen so far is Dead Island which had a region restricted Steam key.

Same. For example I managed to pick up an Assassins Creed IV Steam key off Amazon for €18 compared to €37.50 in the Steam sale. That's a crazy price difference.

Hi, thinking about picking this up: http://www.amazon.com/Square-Enix-41017Tomb-Raider2-Download/dp/B007VFHGZ4?tag=amazongamesales-20

Do I have to jump through many hoops?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,607 ✭✭✭Nollog

    No, it's a steam code

Won't let me download. Do I have to set up a separate account and pretend I live in US?

If you've already bought it you can access the Steam key in your Amazon games library.

    If not:
I think you need a separate account for US Amazon, you definitely need a US address anyway. Some people say to use a state with no sales tax (Alaska, New Hampshire) but I've had no issues using a Chicago, IL address for over a year now.

Yep, just tried it. Added an extra address in alaska, and it worked. Thanks!

Deep Silver games are region locked as I got stung with Saints Row IV and Dead Island Riptide before

Bad one :/ Thanks for letting us know anyway.

Just thought I'd update on my experience: there doesn't seem to be any issues with tomb raider on steam, was playing last night. I thought some note appeared in the EULA (something like of "special to this purchase"), but I'd clicked through before I got a proper look at it. May have just been a general thing.

Think Eidos/Enix hadn't the best financial year last, so they may just be glad to pull in extra revenue through sales from people sitting on the fence about their games.
