Possible Alternator Problem

I have a 2002 Volvo S40 1.8 that was having charging issues up until recently that I just put down to a **** battery that I purchased. After tonight, I'm starting to think however that the alternator is at fault. There have been symptoms for a while such as a squealing serpentine belt and the car just randomly going completely dead after lets say a stop off at the shops. I'd get in, turn the key to be greeted with a flickering of various random lights on the instrument binnacle. I would then jump start the car and would have to rev the bollocks off it to prevent it from stalling when moving off.

Would I be right in my assumption?

If you measure the voltage with a volmeter across the battery with the vehicle running it will point you closer to your assumption.
