while coming home from work the other day i passed a man dumping an old raleigh bike into a skip. after a quick inspection, the bike seemed to be in relatively good nick, chainset, and frame just needed a bit of a wash.
the missus looked slightly concerned when i took it out of the car and announced that id give it a go getting it in running order, hey we all need a hack bike right?
unsure of the exact model so ill be needing help from some of the more knowledgeable boardsies in identifying it.
have to source a new seat post and saddle, chain and rear derailuer....happy Christmas to me....
    ill upload photos later.

Photos added, chains well past best, but r/d seems to be ok. Debating a single speed conversion or keep the current 5speed

I've seen some NEDs trying to sell worse than that on adverts for hundreds! Nice find, will make a nice hack when it's restored.

Mid eighties Raleigh Winner 5 speed. Around 1986.

It was their entry level bike. Retailed in my local bike shop for about 160 old Irish punts. Next model up was a Raleigh Flyer which was 10 speed.

That bike is 10 speed. Chain set and front d/r retrofitted?

This is ideal for a fixie/single speed project, as frame and fork look in good condition.

Looks like the FD was retro-fitted to make it a 10 speed, usually these had a braze on FD rather than a band on. If you look at the serial number stamped under the BB you will be able to figure out the year of manufacture of the frame, I would say early 80's. Google Raleigh serial numbers for more info on this. You may also be able to find the Raleigh catalogues for that year on line as well with thid model in all its glory.

If the wheels are ok you can also just replace the freewheel gear cluster with single speed 17t or 18t freewheel. The tyres are probably shot as well. Then fit a single speed crankset, I picked one cheaply up on ebay that worked very well.

    http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Fixie-Single-Speed-Crankset-Fixed-Gear-Crank-Chrome-46T-9-16-170mm-/261357590122?pt=UK_sportsleisure_cycling_bikeparts_SR&hash=item3cda20566a#ht_1544wt_1003

I would suggest that you change the BB over to a sealed bearing e.g Shimano UN54 or similar, you will also probably need to replace the brake calipers, if you are interested in being able to stop ! You will need to get long reach ones. Attaching the front one can be a bit tricky as well.

I did a manual paint job on my one with spray can etc which was a big job, if I was doing it agian I would get the frame and fork dipped and powder coated, there is a place in Tallaght that do this for about €100.

    Good luck !

anyone have any recomendations as to wheres best for parts? need a r/d f/d and downtube shifters. will a modern r/d work with dt shifters?

you could upgrade to newer tech. I just put an old steel frame back on the road. I had a 7 speed sti rsx groupset that worked fine. I just spread the stays apart when putting in the back wheel. It has worked fine. I needed to do a few things like drilling out the brake caliber holes, drilling and tapping a mount for cable guide on bb, getting a cable stop where downtube shifters should be etc but it turned out well! :-) The newer type r/d threaded on fine to the old style dropout and the band on f/d wasn't a problem as they had come off a broken steel frame! Could be worth considering as you might pick up a a cheap sit groupset here pretty cheep! I can't wait to get some serious miles on it but the seapost is just too short at the moment! Might be a Jan sale present to myself!
