Will Ferrell is not the comedy genius everyone makes him out to be.

He is overrated, I watched anchorman last night and even though I seen it before I thought I'd give it another go.
All I can say is I was underwhelmed.

No not liking home has nothing to do with me thinking him funny or not, I like him, he's just not as funny as everyone thinks he is.
Sure he has done some funny **** but overall he is just not as funny as everyone thinks he is.

So how funny is he? And how funny does "everyone" think he is in comparison?

He as about fifty percent funny as everyone thinks he Is.
Is that a good enough description?

Anchorman ain't even his best movie. Watch Step Brothers and his scenes in Eastbound & Down and you'll see why he's the funniest!

He's not overrated, he is a master of his art when it comes to that style of comedy. If its not up your alley then that's fine but just because you don't get it doesn't mean he's overrated.

The onus is on you to tell us why you think He is not as funny as everyone thinks. As it stands your thread just reads like you woke up in a bad mood with Will Ferrell.

I really liked night at the roxbury, even though I know it's bad. Same joke over and over. No real story. But I couldn't stop laughing...

Like I said he is funny sometimes.
But when I watch his movies it's just seems everyone just loves his wacky humour.
In nearly all of anchorman most of the jokes just fall flat and that Ferrell spends most of his time trying to show off.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,314 ✭✭✭weiland79

    All completely subjective anyway.
I think Eddie Murphys RAW is one of the funniest things I've ever seen, even if it is a complete rip off of Richard Prior. My wife cannot stand it. Watch ya gonna do?

Quibbling about the relative funniness of comedians seems like the most redundant form of creative discussion. Humour (to me) is the most subjective form of entertainment by a long shot, most of the times utterly intangible (even if there are certain rules of comedy), utterly at discretion of the viewer and thus completely impossible to pin down a coherent argument most of the time, especially when it's an argument based on negativity.

As to Ferrell, he has a schtick and he sticks to it. When he's on form he's a very talented, funny comedian. But like most comedians being courted by Hollywood he does a lot of work on autopilot - that's been the case since year zero of cinema so what are you going to do? That said, if doing Anchorman 2 means he gets the creative wriggle-room to involve himself in another production like Stranger Than Fiction, I'll be more than happy to indulge his Ron Burgundy character...

I saw most of Anchorman last night and like The Big Lebowski I didn't find it that funny and completely do not understand the hype. There were certain moments in the film that made me laugh like the erection scene and the news presenter fight, I enjoyed the oblique references to 70s sci fi/fantasy tv shows/films, in terms of how the dialogue was phrased or the fight scene which reminded me of Star Trek but otherwise it's not the masterpiece it's made out to be. Still it's ok entertainment and I'll probably see Anchorman 2 as I like American comedy generally.

Admittedly he is funnier than Brendan ó Carroll.... But Nelson Mandelas funeral was funnier than Mrs Brown's boys.

hes rated at the exact level he should be rated at, no more no less, the BO tells no lies, hes good films are successful at the BO and his bad are failures at the BO,

    cant get simpler than that,

Excellent in Eastbound & Down . He should nearly try and make a movie based on that character he plays in it .

'The Other Guys', and his broadway play 'You're Welcome America' are both excellent imo. I think he does good satire when he wants to, but the more in your face slapstick movies are where he makes the big money.

Well of course it does because humor is subjective......

Believe it or not people are different, you don't think he is funny yet I find him funny as hell!

Who's right and who's wrong? Neither.... Subjective

You see that's part of the problem, it can be a tad inconsistent.
I think Ross Nobles improv is far superior.

Didn't even know he was rated in the first place, he's an Adam Sandler type Z rate "Comedy" actor at best. I tried to watch "Anchorman" for the first time about 6 months ago and switched it off after 20 minutes of zero laughs, rubbish.

The first time I watched zoolander I wanted to turn it off. I didn't get it, then something clicked in my head the next time. I was just on the same wavelength as the comedy and I loved it. there's been a few movies that friend of mine would have slated as muck that I find hilarious. Dude where's my car is one of my favourites. It's all relative.

That cheese isn't as nice as everyone says it is etc. All opinions on the internet should have (IMO) brackets attached lest we take them as fact (IMO) :)

Can we just close this thread, and then the internet.

Will Ferrell isn't funny imo. Same gags, same delivery, same stupid faces. No variety, no versatility, no strong material. People like him because they're told he's funny imo. I doubt but that anyone with any knowledge of comedy or a sense of independent would find him anything more than a hack with a silly face (something which, despite the tone of this post, DEFINITELY has a place).

His finer moments can be best classed as 'amusing' rather than funny

Blasphemy, Will Ferrell is the Anchorman,

And if you don't dig it you don't know Anchorman funny.

I will rewatch Anchorman and then see Anchorman 2.

And yes i love it :D

Agreed. The problem with Anchorman is that the script is simply really average. It's simple slapstick comedy with some sexism thrown in to push the boundaries or something I dunno. There are one or two funny lines but overall it's a borefest. It's the kind of movie that people believe is funny because they've been told it is so many times. But it's not. Not even close.

Imo both Ferrell and Carell's funniest work comes in their respective sitcom roles (Eastbound and Down and The US Office). I also think Ferrell is funny in Old School, Semi Pro, Blades of Glory, Wedding Crashers etc.

Oh and Zoolander will always be a far superior movie than Anchorman, which as it happens Ferrell is also brilliant in.

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 49 Little Italy

He needs a script to be funny, but that's ok. His delivery is spot on. Anchorman, incidentally, is nowhere near his best work. That would be Blades of Glory or his role as federal wildlife Marshall Willenholy in Jay and Silent Bob.

I watched Anchorman about 6 months ago and although it was OK but I found myself trying to force myself to laugh for a lot of it. It may sound stupid but I always feel under pressure to laugh when I am watching a comedy film and more and more I'm finding the majority of film comedies to be quite boring.

I have enjoyed some out and out comedy films like Naked Gun,Dumb and Dumber but In general I think if a comedy film is to work well there has to be something else to them apart from the comedy element the 2 best comedy films I have seen in recent years were 500 days of summer and 50/50 but they had an interesting story to them and so there was a proper story to get involved in.90 minutes or more is almost always far too long for out and out comedy and I find the sitcom format far better suited to comedy than a full length feature film.

Comedy industry have really run out of ideas. Every comedy that comes out nowadays is terrible, needs a few fresh ideas to get away from the same rehashed stuff with ferell, rudd, Seth rogen Ben stiller etc.

Just played out at this stage.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 243 ✭✭Lukehandypants

Sheep, I like that description. Everyone is told hey this is funny u must like it and will Ferrell and his bunch of cronies are the perfect example of people laughing because they are told it's funny.
When at best it is very uneven comedy with the same bunch of guys all circle jerking each other off.
The majority of American comedy is from this particular stable.
I find all that type of mainstream American comedy for the masses very lazy, simply playing by the numbers just to appeal to the wider audience.
The audience are being sheep and just follow along being feed this medoricre humour.
Hey, no one likes a laugh as much as me, well except maybe my wife, but I have tried to be a sheep and get into this comedy and failed, I have thought maybe there is something wrong with me that I have no sense of humour, my wife frequently says that to me particularly after I ran over our cat.
