    Hey folks,

Quick ques, just wanted to check if anyone knew what frame I would need for a bike.It was suggested by somebody on done deal that 47cm frame would be good for a female of height 5'3?? As I don't have a clue, just wondering if any of the experienced cyclists would be able to help me out and to clarify if this is indeed correct? Cheers!

It's more complicated than that basically. Overall height isn't as important as leg length for example, but arm and torso length also count.

There's a huge number of rules of thumb, for example, when pedalling your legs should extend almost straight with each rotation but never completely straight.

The most important thing is to go to a shop and actually sit on a bike. Any reputable place (of which there are tons) will give you good advice and you can determine for yourself what is comfortable.

Here's a link to virtually the first site I found when I searched for "bike size guide" which is conveniently from a shop in Dublin (which I'm sure is a coincidence and not a consequence of Google storing information about everything I do online).

I sized myself up over the internet. I was looking at a Giant and all sizes pointed toward a M/L.

I went to my LBS (who knows me) and he reckoned that I was an L - to prove it, he set me off on a spin with a M/L which I instantly knew was too small. I bought the L from my LBS in the end and I'm happy out.

Nothing online can compare with the service you get from your LBS.

Cheers to Jim at Wolfe Cycles.

Sizing varies by manufacturer, so one brand may not have the same geometry as another. You need to start trying different bikes. Unless you're going bargain bin pricing, it is an expensive mistake to buy the wrong size. If you have any female friends who cycle and are similar size, try their bikes. Otherwise LBS as recommended. I add the cavet though... do not get fobbed off on something they want to sell, which may not be an exact fit. Not all shops are as ethical as others!
