Just saw this article, and popped the numbers into excel and sure enough it works out. Cars are very slow machines it seems
    http://housealive.org/cob-speed/
I now cycle over 10k km a year and love every km of it. Not going back
none of these numbers are mine, I'm just using them as an example
    Annual depreciation 1,500
    Annual tax 400
    Insurance 800
    NCT 100
    NCT preparation 150
    PArking and tolls 100
    Maintenance and repairs 200
    Servicing 250
    Tyres 100
    km driven 12,000
    L/100 km 6
    L fuel used 720
    cost/L 1.5
    Cost of fuel 1,080
    total running cost 4,680
    Gross earnings cost 6,240
    Pay per hour 25
    # hours needed to earn this 250 h
Time taken for administring car (fuelling, maintenance, nct, insurance, buying and selling, repairing, walking from car parks) 50 h
total hours required to pay for and administer car 300 h

Average driving speed including stops 50 kmh
Time taken to drive 240 h
Total time associated with vehicle 540 h
    Average real speed 22 kmh

Anoth er way of looking at it is how much do I get paid to cycle:
    Cycling speed 25 kmh
    Time to cycle 480
    Additional travelling time 240
Hourly pay rate for cycling 26
