Gateway Scheme?

Brother in law got an offer to participate in the Gateway scheme in the new year,he's a bit hesitant to accept it because he was messed about on the TUS scheme before.Just wondering if anyone else has participated in it before and what the work was like and was it managed well?

I read the information leaflet and it sounds quite good in the fact that he'd be working in the council, and not at the whim of a badly run charity like he had been on TUS.

    Cheers for any info.

Just read up on this, didnt know about this scheme,

Under the National Employment Action Plan someone getting Jobseeker’s Allowance (JA) is required to take up work opportunities such as the offer of a Gateway work placement. If they refuse a work opportunity without good reason, they may have their social welfare payment reduced or terminated. If, following a refusal of a placement, someone’s payment is reduced or terminated they may appeal this decision to the Social Welfare Appeals Office within 21 days.

They can stop his dole if he refuses it.
and you pay tax on it if payed over a certain amount.
out of curiosity how old is your brother in law?

I'd not heard of it either.

He's 32 or 33 I think. He gets €188 now and he said that would be topped up by €20 to €208 on this scheme. How much tax would he pay on that?if he comes out with less then he's getting now its kind of pointless.

He should be ok on tax, i think if its over €352, but still not given a option.

Was hoping to hear other folks experience of the scheme, because they all sound wonderful on those brochure pages!

He did the TUS scheme without hearing peoples actual experience of it (and had awful trouble with the shower he got assigned to) and doesn't want to walk into the same hassle again.

I reckon he'll be okay myself because its the council running it and they'll be more professional.

Don't count on it...there is a lot of exploitation going on because of the public service jobs embargo and short staff.

The jobs embargo is due to end dec 2014, I wonder how many people on these schemes with local authorities will get one!!! it will be a different ball game then.

The unions wont be turning a blind eye then.

    Hey,

Just wondering if your brother in law took the job on the gateway scheme? I've just been offered it myself. I'll take the job, but would prefer to hear of someone else's experience! What sort of work do they offer? Cos what the say on the website sounds great, but I'd imagine it's not as wonderful as it sounds haha this is the dsp after all!

I started a gateway scheme 3 weeks ago with dublin city counsil and i must say that i am a lot worst off since starting! First of all they tell you that you will get an extra 20 euro on top off your 188 euro to make 208 euro weekly but you pay PRSI out of that! My take home pay this week was 198.40 euro, i work 5 days a week costing me 5.60 euro a day on the bus, that adds up to 28 euro a week not inculding other exspences like lunch. So more or less my social welfare payment has been deducted by 17.60 euro. This may not seem like a lot but i could hardly manage on the 188 euro alone. As for the job its self, 16 people started the day i started, our supervisor stood there looking at us not having a clue what he should do with us all, the days have become long and boring because we stand around most of the time, iv asked the supervisor to move me somewhere else but he says i have to wait 6 months for a transfer! This is a ridiculous situation to be in there isn't even anyone to complain too and theres still no jobs out there!

if your were on the standard 188 dole payment, then you do not pay any tax. you get the full 208. what happens to most people is that are put on emergency tax when first start and need to ring Revenue to get it sorted. the tax payed is then back dated.

I'll be on to the revenue tomorrow Im also going to demand a transfer tomorrow when I go into work! The fact that we are standing around doing nothing bothers me more out of everything, if I'm going to be working then at least give me some work to do!

I started on gateway back in February and I couldn't fault it at all. I was lucky enough to get office work with a local community centre and am pretty much allowed to work on my own initiative. I was getting the standard 208 a week but I only noticed today that I have started paying PAYE last week. It was only €3 last week but today I have paid just short of €10!! I filled in all my tax forms before I started so my payment was always fine. I wasn't coming out with much extra financially as a result of doing the job but now it's really not paying at all when I factor in expenses. I was looking at the job more as an opportunity to develop my skills so didn't mind only making enough to get me by but if this continues I'll have to reassess things.

Should I contact revenue about this or Pobal as they issue payment?
