So I'm down the best part of four stone from March 2013 and I'm actually becoming quite the fitness fanatic.

I live in Rathfarnham, study in the CC and would love some tips on the appropriate type of bike to buy for cycling daily.

I have no clue which type would be best for this journey. I've approx 400-500 to spend on a decent set of wheels.

    Thanks lads

Done deal would be ur best bet for something second hand, well done on your fitness success.

Very well done. What did you do to lose 4 stone?

    Exercise and Diet.

Basically 1400 calories a day with at least 40 mins on an exercise bike. Try to minimise carb intake, but don't exclude and aim for 250mins plus exercise in the week!

Would I be aiming for a Road bike then?

If I lived and worked in the city I would buy a single speed bike, light and simple. As I live outside the pale and work in the city I ride a road bike, gears come in handy on the hilly sections.
I tried a hybrid but they are heavy and not as comfortable as a road bike for longer rides (over 20km) maybe OK for City rides though.
I bought a 2nd hand Carrera TDF for €200 and replaced the wheels with some lighter Shimano ones for €80, which I then furnished with Continental GP4000s tyres.
I do however have a sub 7kg carbon fibre bike which I ride to work now and then as a little treat.

If you can, start cycling to work. It is the easiest, cheapest and most time effective way of keeping in good shape. The type of bike would depend where you live and what type of riding you will mainly undertake.
