Is it legal to work 9 and 10 hour shifts 8 days in a row, with as little as seven hours rest period between some?

No, and if your employer is making you do that, you should report him/her to NERA.

You're supposed to have a certain amount of hours between shifts, I think 12.

I remember working to like 1-2AM on the 23rd and being back (a few minutes) in on the 24th. Manager was pretty annoyed, though he apologised later that day!

There should be an 11 hour rest period between each day of work, so if you finish at midnight you should not be in until at least 11am next morning,
    check Nera website

That's corrct in general - but there are some exemptions as per the citizen's information link proivdied above. From memory, these include some parts of the hospitality industry.

Don't be too quick to take the info from the NERA websites as correct because quite frankly a lot of it is outdated and inaccurate.
