just a general question on the size of digger, lets assume the operator is competent and isn't waiting for trucks etc to come so he can fill them up

say an 8tonne v 12tonne machine, with a competent operator in the seat will the 12 tonne do 50% more work in a day

take a job like drainage for example

It depends on what youre doing.
Youll have more reach and bigger buckets on a 12 tonner.
An 8 tonner will have a faster cycle time.

if its not hard digging id say the fuel usage would be the only differance if both drivers were good

It will depend a bit on the job and if the 12 tonne can use a bigger bucket.
The example of drainage both diggers will use the same width bucket so 12 tonne will need to work quiker to do 50% more.

Depends on the difficulty of the ground, the access available, and the volume of what it's digging.
8 ton machine could be a waste of money on the wrong ground trying to do bulker work on large open drains / laying larger pipes.
12 ton machine could be the wrong plant on easier ground doing slower finer work and smaller open drains, laying smaller pipe work.

An example might be clearing a straight forward site for a house and digging its founds and heavy landscaping could be done by a 12 ton machine. Later on the pipes and ducts around the house and ligher landscaping could be done with an 8 ton.
