I need to get an MOT done on my car somewhere convenient to the ferry port (Holyhead or Pembroke)

    Can anyone recommend a place?

Can you get an MOT in the NORTH?

done or just booked ? :-)

If it's the old one of I can drive my car to an MoT as long as I have it booked, be aware the cops over will seize your car first if there is any doubt and argue about it second. Best of luck if that's the case.

As for recommendations, I can't help.

NI has a different MOT system than the rest of the UK and unfortunately they don't transfer.

no, I really want to get it done, its step one in getting the car re-registered with UK plates.
(I imported it from UK in '08 so its originally a UK car but the process is the same)

I got mine done in Cybi garage on London Road in Holyhead about 500 metres from the port after arrival back from Dublin in July. Quick and efficient, went to a cafe down the road to wait. Needs to be prebooked and they may ask you for card details to book as they get lots of no shows. When I did mine there was a bit of argy bargy between the receptionist (a Jordan clone) and the head mechanic which was a bit comical. When she headed off on lunch before myc ar was done, he apologised explaining that they had recently split up and he had bought her out of her share in the garage but she still wanted to work there. I'd be happy to get it done there again (if necessary).

Will they mot a foreign registered car?

Yes, I have mot'd lots of Southern Irish vehicles in the North, you must mot a foreign vehicle in the UK in order to register it.....not the other way round ,mot it on it's 'Irish' plate first then pay DVLA £55 registration fee they will issue a reg and v5 and then you can go back to the mot station to have the mot cert ex-changed or leave it as is as the vin will match plus the vehicle must be insured on the vin no.

I wonder do most MOT stations know this?
I phoned one in Holyhead today and he said "so long as the plate shows up on the VOSA website, then I can MOT it..."
I think he also said I need to bring the V5 with me, which didn't make any sense (how can I bring a V5, when I need the MOT first to apply for the V5)

One last question, how long does it take the DVLA to issue V5's?

    thanks !

Not too bad on the V5's, when i changed address it took about a week from when i posted off the old one. Close to xmas though might be a different matter.

    /edit
Most of the big kwik fits do MOT's and halfords have garages that do them too.

For cars, a v5's will be issued straight away once application is accept also it should be noted that where a commerical vehicle is for registration in the UK you must apply for a NOVA no. and HM revenue & customs will ask if vat is due and will ask for proof of vat having been paid previously in Ireland...if you cannot prove this they will charge vat at whatever value they put on the vehicle but again this is on commercial vehicles only.
Lots of information available on the DVLNi and DVLA website regarding registering a vehicle.

You need a NOVA number for Cars too. I needed this when registering a car in the North. It's easy and free. Can be done online.

    Two things the DVLA are looking for which I don't have are;

-insurance. (its very expensive to get temporary insurance in UK and I'm assuming my irish insurance doesn't qualify, it specifies british insurance cert or cover note)
-proof of UK address. I don't live in UK so don't have any utility bills with uk address.

any suggestions how to get around these?

Only way round this is have family or friend over there insure and register the car in their name as if they had just come over here and bought it and are now taking it home to the UK or have a UK trade dealer register it and then 'sell' it or transfer it to you once registered.
But really what you should be doing is getting an address sorted first with a utility bill attached to it in your name and insure the vehicle on a full policy using it's vin no. not reg.
