Despite the execution of Kim's Uncle Rodman still went to visit the "Good Guy Dear Leader" in North Korea....

What on Earth is going on, why is Rodman getting so much publicity for NK ? Its downright insane

Rodman initially was invited over for something basketball-related and became the first westerner to have an audience with Kim (in power). Apparently they quite hit it off.

So perhaps he feels like he has some obligation to use and develop that relationship of privilege to try and open up NK to the world (and the world to NK)?

Or perhaps he is being paid a large sum of money...

Just because you're a commie doesn't mean you can't have friends.

Imagine if Dennis Rodman is the one to open up full diplomatic ties between North Korea and the rest of the world, where countless others have failed.

It would certainly put Nixon and Kissinger in the shade.

He's a massive basketball fan, specifically of the American NBA. Rodmans a hero to him.

It seems to be as simple as that.

If someone lowers themselves enough to be part of Celebrity Big Brother, becoming mates with Kim is probably the next logical step.

Wasn't Rodman announced to coach the NK basketball team? It's not that surprising he's around.

Quote from the big man himself:

"It has nothing to do with me. I mean, whatever his uncle has done, and whoever's done anything in North Korea, I have no control over that," Rodman said in Beijing. "I mean, these things have been going on for years and years and years. "I'm just going over there to do a basketball game and have some fun"

What annoy's me more is the Irish angle in all this– PaddyPower is sponsoring Rodman in his North Korea "adventure". For the crack like.

Maybe basketball can bring some happiness to the North Koreans generally miserable lives

Rodman is never going to win their trust if he is dissing them in the media, so hence his diplomatic answer above

I look at it this way:

    1. Everyone he meets will be screened to be "suitable" to speak/interact with a foreigner.
    2. Hence, everyone he meets is close to the regime (or at least closer than the average North Korean).
    3. He is only hanging around Pyongyang - a city only available to the most loyal members of the ruling party.
    3. Therefore, he is only interacting with (or giving joy as you put it), to the people directly responsible for supporting the political party that commits the very worst human rights violations on the planet.

I hate to bring up Godwin's law, but in this case, the regime really does have concentration/death camps. I'm more annoyed that an Irish company would interact/sponsor events with such people. But I know they are just looking for outrage to gain attention/advertising.

Rodman is no fool. He has remained pretty much detached from politics in his dealings with NK. I'm sure he's fully aware of the atrocities in the country, but what should he do... turn his back on them, cut ties, and become another foreigner who wants to see them crumble?

The man is there doing what he does, and that's how it should be. Not everything needs to be steeped in politics and biases. Leave the politicking to the politicians.

International participation and acceptance, in sport or anything else is a positive and progressive thing.

These people are in a category of my mind with Segal and Kylie and Mr Blobby.

Why is there a connection between this and the Communism Vs Capitalism, International relations and UN treaties section of my mind.

    This should not be.

A woman famous for having a fat ass is featuring in the non-sexual yet still important sphere.

And theres not even mention of charity. The only possible explanation.

    This should not be.

Rodman will be of course presented with the best of hospitality, will be charmed by an affable Kim Jong Un and will be only in the rich parts of the country. He will be sheltered from the extreme poverty and the Love/Hate style murderous paranoia of the regime's members. Rodman will be like Nidge's children on Christmas morning: well looked after and shielded from the realities! Rodman has come back calling the place fun and I'm sure sitting down drinking the finest of cognac while signing lucrative contracts and being told by Kim how great he is would be fun!

Now, whether it is a good or a bad thing one can argue. On one hand, it could open up the place more but on the other side of things, he is damaging basketball's image and his own by being openly friendly with the top man in one of the worst current dictatorships.

Happy to see that Paddy Power has pulled their support. They were "surprised" at the neg reaction they had received. Idiots.

Apparently Rodman is failing to find enough "NBA Stars" willing to travel to NK to make up a team
