Sorry to hijack this thread, I'm looking to upgrade the wheelset on my giant defy 3 but I'm a bit lost when it comes to the best upgrade on a tight enough budget. Ideally I'd like to spend less than 500. Any suggestions welcome?

    Cheers

Was doing a bit of looking myself last few days & see Campagnola Neutron Ultras for 540 euros below. Would there be a significant difference between the Zondas & Neutrons. Only changed the tyres on my year old Canyon Roadlite week ago from the stock Mavic Aksions to Michelin Pro 4s & very surprised at the level of difference in the ride. So elbows flying, would there be a significant difference between the Mavic Aksiums & Zondas also?

    I agree.

What weight are you. What types of roads are you riding on. What type of cycling are you doing. Are you carrying panniers ect.

I get all mine hand built from Parker International in the UK. Usually 36 hole Mavic Open Pro rim, Ultegra Hub, DT Swiss or Sapim spokes.

Come in about 320 a pair and very strong..

Can I ask where you can get them for 300-350? I have been looking but they are all around the 500 mark.

For example the below shows them at 510 euro.

I pick up a set of Mavic Ksyrium Elites from here for under €350 plus €29 shipping. Very happy with them indeed and it was the best price I could find. They are last years model but I think its only the graphics that have changed.

Yeah for campag hub, shimano hub version is €319, still cheapest I can find them though.

Go with the Zondas. Best wheel for the money in my opinion.

I had neutron ultras for a couple of years and liked them. They have a lower profile rim, internal nipples, aluminium spokes and carbon hub bodies, but actually weighed more than the Zondas. Think Zondas are a better choice.

You would get Mavic krysium elite wheels for around the same price. They would be last years model though

I have to admit total confusion about wheels. Last spring, I had the opportunity to test a set of Mavic Ksyrium SLS Clincher wheels in place of my basic Aksiums. I had 2 weeks and tested them over 5/ 6 spins.

Result- no difference in Avge speed over a very well trodden 30km spin. On some longer spins- difference in avge speed/ top speed- absolutely no difference. I was heartbroken coz I was dying to spend the cash -they looked so damn good and I was convinced I would be faster than the mates. Couldn't justify the spend based on this test and wonder whether the extremely marginal (if any) gains justify the huge jump in price unless you are at the hard edge of competitive cycling. I can't bear to be a Marketing man's dream- coz I work in Marketing.

Apologies for hijacking the thread but what would be a ballpark average lifespan for a set of wheels. I have Mavic Aksiums on one of my bikes with 13,000 kms on them. My LBS says they are on their last legs. They don't look that worn to me.

Has anyone who replaced their wheels with the Zondas noticed an increase in the average speed. Dot forget the only proven way to increase speed is to lose the spare gut around the middle or a at least reduce it:P

My Mavic Equipe set has about 37k km on and the wheels are straight and bearings are OK. Rims are worn though and I am going to replace them soon. I am actually considering a custom made wheels, don't think I will buy another off the shelf set.

For what it's worth, I used to race on Fulcrum Racing 3's, and at the end of last season replaced them with Campagnolo Scirocco 35's. They feel different, sure, but there is no difference in my speed. Similarly, I train on Mavic Aksiums: feel like a poorer wheel, don't slow me down though.

I've noticed far greater differences in comfort, feel and speed with changes to tyres than with changes to wheels.

I upgraded to the Campagnolo Scirocco 35's too from stock Giant wheels and found a noticeable difference across the board. Good option instead of the Zonda's and leaves a few quid to spend on other upgrades.

Have a look at this page grab from Merlin..

    http://www.merlincycles.com/bike-shop/wheels/road-wheels/factory-road-wheels/?page=2

I bought the Mavic Kysrium from them 2 years ago and the set of Fulcrum Racing 3's last year-one set for winter training on our nice potholes here in Wicklow, the second set for well, warmer weather on our nice potholes here in Wicklow!

Couldn't be happier with both sets, although check the spoke tension on the Mavics-I sold the set that I bought from Merlin and bought a set here on Boards that I currently use. They came straight off a Boardman and had been unused but several of the spokes were loose-a common problem with shipped Mavics.

Like yourself, I had set a modest limit of 5-600 euro for a wheelset- I don't race and the weight saving will be coming off my waistband in kilos, not off a component in grams!!

Best of luck with the purchase-let us know how it goes!!

I think it depends on the type of cycling. I get about 15,000 kms on a set before the rim wears but the hub is usually fine. That is commuting however where I am using the brakes regularly whereas presumably Seweryn who gets 37,000kms does not do as much braking as a city commute..

My mileage is also commuting mainly, but I do not brake much. Waste of energy ;).

I've got these to replace giant wheels on the defy 1, which had an awfully harsh ride on gatorskins. Zondas made a world of difference in ride quality with same tyres. I think my 1st impression was they roll a lot better, power transfer seemed to be more apparent. I was a bit skeptic about the lack of spokes, but after 3K km on them they are still true, while giant wheels have been trued, tightened numerous times and still click now and then. I use them on turbo and winter training. Zondas are equipped with GP4000 today, the ride is beautiful compared to my previous experience.

Every bit helps at this time of the year so, using this code (D39DADC0FDDA)
you get an extra 15 UK pounds off a spend of 250.

BTW, I don't work for Merlin!!!:):):)
