Tip for psychopaths: if you wait until the train goes past and then push the fat lad over, six people will have died with the same amount of effort.

Nothing, I could put my back out.

I'm trying to imagine a situation where you'd have time to push someone in front of a train but not enough to warm the people.

I'm trying to imagine a really small train that a human could stop by being pushed in front of it.

A big fat american eating 10 super size macdonald meals would make a fair attempt at it.

    Ask her.

in the millisecond you have to make the decision, how the hell could you calculate with any certainty that the fat man will derail the train and consequently save the other people.

    Worst Moral Dilemma ever.

I'm trying to imagine a reality where I'm strong enough to push something that's heavy enough to stop a speeding train.

The 5 people shouldn't be on the line. No way should the fat guy die to save 5 morons

In monster movies why do the monsters always obsessively chase the humans when they would only be a morsel or at the best a very light snack?

Cut your arm off with your swiss army knife.

Why not just push a person off a cliff instead?

It's a far easier and cleaner kill. Trains are messy. :)

I would ask him which door his brother would tell me to open.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,807 ✭✭✭speedboatchase

Let the 5 die. Fat guy doesn't deserve to die. If the 5 die it's their fault for being on the line.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,590 ✭✭✭✭kneemos

You have to feel sorry for the fat guy,he dies either way.

Wouldn't the five people on the line be able to hear the approach of the train? I heard that trains are noisy.

What about all the orphans on then train then? They might die if the train derails.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,720 ✭✭✭Sir Arthur Daley

One in five European adults are now considered obese so the fat man might not be alone in this situation, plus when the train hits the fat man the fat train driver will get thrown out of the front of the train and 3 fat people could get killed.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,166 ✭✭✭Fr_Dougal

I'd video it and stick it up on YouTube.

Is the train diesel or electric?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 71,802 ✭✭✭✭Ted_YNWA

would the train driver not see 6 people (fat man & this group of 5) on the line & sound the horn.

Are any of the group of 5 fat & able to stop the train, thus sparing Fattie #1.

Will this affect commuter services in the morning? Need to know as the bus leaves earlier & will need to adjust the time I get up in the morning acccordingly

Would I have time to ride any of the five before they die. Or do I have to wait til after?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,413 ✭✭✭Archeron

How fat are the five people?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,273 ✭✭✭racso1975

Of the 5 people to possibly survive if i push the fat guy.........How many of them will give me great head?? Being female is a given

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,221 ✭✭✭NuckingFacker

Would derailing the train with big-boy kill more people in the crash?? Strokes white cat..maybbee it'd skid along and clip the five as well... and there could be a fire...

Why the feck would it even dawn on you to push someone in front of a feckin train??? Would agitated hand signals and loud screaming be of any use??

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,720 ✭✭✭Sir Arthur Daley

How will Macdonalds survive if we loose all these fat people, there has to be another solution.

let the train hit the people …. if you push the fat man - he dies, train driver dies, passenger dies etc

if people were on the tracks they were there by choice - and fate…. you can't change fate … only delay it.

    (final destination comes to mind)

fat guy was not due to die so …why kill him

  • Moderators, Regional East Moderators Posts: 23,238 Mod ✭✭✭✭GLaDOS

This is a man so fat he can stop a train, but you think he can be moved involuntarily by pushing him.

If you're that strong you can probably stop the train yourself, without killing anybody (except the people on board)

Cake, and grief counseling, will be available at the conclusion of the test

Tip for psychopaths: if you wait until the train goes past and then push the fat lad over, six people will have died with the same amount of effort.

But fatty survives the fall. It's the train that would kill him. Bad tip.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,235 ✭✭✭✭Cee-Jay-Cee

I'd push the fat man onto the people killing him and them. Everyone's a winner then.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,567 ✭✭✭Red Pepper

How high from tracks is the bridge?!? I say fatty survives the fall.

That is a possibility because all the food will fall out of his hands and protect his fall, 10 super size meals and 25 bags of crisps will make a good cushion.

If fatty could spell dilemma correctly, I would let him live.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trolley_problem

In that link it says that studies show most people disagree with pushing the man.

[Even though in another scenario where 5 people are tied to a track and diverting the train would kill one most people would choose to save the 5 people. ]

The difference seems to lie in the actual deliberate act of pushing someone.
Resistance to this course of action seems strong; most people who approved of sacrificing one to save five in the first case do not approve in the second sort of case.[7] This has led to attempts to find a relevant moral distinction between the two cases.
One clear distinction is that in the first case, one does not intend harm towards anyone – harming the one is just a side effect of switching the trolley away from the five. However, in the second case, harming the one is an integral part of the plan to save the five. This is an argument Shelly Kagan considers, and ultimately rejects, in The Limits of Morality.[8]
A claim can be made that the difference between the two cases is that in the second, you intend someone's death to save the five, and this is wrong, whereas in the first, you have no such intention. This solution is essentially an application of the doctrine of double effect, which says that you may take action which has bad side effects, but deliberately intending harm (even for good causes) is wrong.
Act utilitarians deny this. So do some non-utilitarians such as Peter Unger, who rejects that it can make a substantive moral difference whether you bring the harm to the one or whether you move the one into the path of the harm.[citation needed] Note, however, that rule utilitarians do not have to accept this, and can say that pushing the fat man over the bridge violates a rule to which adherence is necessary for bringing about the greatest happiness for the greatest number.[citation needed]
Another distinction is that the first case is similar to a pilot in an airplane that has lost power and is about to crash and currently heading towards a heavily populated area. Even if he knows for sure that innocent people will die if he redirects the plane to a less populated area – people who are "uninvolved" – he will actively turn the plane without hesitation. It may well be considered noble to sacrifice your own life to protect others, but morally or legally allowing murder of an innocent person in order to save five people may be insufficient justification.[clarification needed]

There's a few other interesting moral dilemmas in that link too.

I think I would just run away.

I'd buy a six pack of Bundys and make burgers for me and the five people out of the mince meat.
