I have been offered a job as a photographer with a well enough known online magazine to do their event photography. From what I have been told, most of the jobs won't be paid but I would get significant exposure to media etc.. Has anyone gotten offers like this before and how did they turn out? Is the exposure worth the non payment aspect?

Exposure is worth absolutely NOTHING. ZERO. EVER.

And it's not a job if you're expected to do it for free.

You might gain some experience and make contacts though.

Contacts who know you will work for free aren't much good to you. Trust me on this :)

I have been taking photos for a little over two years for payment, not much now, covers costs if even that but its still payment, I think I'm going to let this one pass me by.. Im sure everyone form the lads on the door to the people serving drinks are getting paid, so why should I the person who has dumped a lot of time and money into photography go home having made a loss

If you work for nothing, you'll never be out of work.

It's hard to call it a job if it actually costs you money. I was recently asked to provide some images for press for free with the promise that there would be more paid requests for the images later on. Funnily enough the paid requests didn't arrive.

in todays world , you get paid for jobs, working for free is a favour - and unless this organization is a charity , I'd tell them where to stuff ther exposure - trying paying your ESB bill with this exposure

I do some stuff for online publications for nothing, but it's because I love it, it's a hobby and I do it with some great friends. I don't kid myself and think there'll be anything coming of it really. If the website didn't exist, I'd still be doing it for myself.

That said I've worked with a large published magazine and their online component last Summer and I thought I'd get something out of it then. I worked for nothing and when I said after 4 months that I can't afford to be doing this anymore, they just moved onto someone else who would work for free. I felt awfully stupid then!
