Hi all. I started feeding the wrapped silage today and noticed holes all round the bottom of de wrapped bales. It starts at the ground and goes to around 7inches high, hundreds of little holes on each bale.
It's only happened on the bales all around the outside. It's like a bird pecked them???
The bales are on de round and on their ends, can't understand it?? I'll try send pics!

Could be a cat using them as a scratch post.

Heres a link to a old thread about it. http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2056491377

That's bad. If it was a cat, then the holes would be kinda dragged down towards the ground, if you know what I mean. A bird would would made a rounder cleaner hole, with more silage pulled out. I've always heard that it's birds bringing worms up on the bale to eat them that holes the plastic, so my money is on a cat using them as a scrathing post.

If it had been dragged through a gap to low the wrap would only be damaged at what was the bottom of the bale, and wouldn't be damaged were the pipes of the handler were, however that damage seems to wrap the hole way around the bale so i doubt it would be from dragging, also dragging normally tends to leave a long rip, there more puncture wounds..

Yeah I reckon it's birds. If I dragged it through a gap it would be torn not this is pin holes which I think suggests birds?

Have seen it happen, council had raised road into field, bale dragged on tar on way in. It was only happening at that point but if this was the case it wouldn't be whole way around the bale as suggested

Have you got hens around you there cos it definitely is not a cat cos they stand on their hind legs to scratch so it would be much higher up and it would be long tears.

Agree with previous post, cat would scratch higher, you need to get a few cats to keep birds away
