Registering a Northern Ireland Car

I'm thinking of buying a 1.4 Opel Astra from a relative in Northern Ireland. The car was initially registered in Ireland (04-D) and was later registered in the north.

I know I will have to pay VRT on it but was wondering what are the rules about NCT/MOT? If it has been MOT'd will this count in the Republic of Ireland or will it need to be NCT'd staright away?

Would the fact that it was registered here before affect the cost of VRT?

You almost certainly wont have to pay VRT (unless it's been reclaimed which is a very recent development)

You will need a new NCT as soon as it's been re-registered.

VRT is only paid once which in this case was when the car was bought new here in the South. The car will need to be registered here and will get it's original Irish registration number too.

That's excellent news! Thanks for that.

I presume the motor tax office would be the place to go to get it registered on it's original Irish reg??
