    Hi guys,

I want to travel tomorrow at 7:25 AM from Hueston (Dublin) to Waterford station.

I would like to know where can I purchase the ticket at Heuston? Is there machine or qeue where I can buy the ticket? Do they accept cash?

And which platform do I wait for the Waterford train? Is there any announcement inside the train regarding which stop is going to come up next? Or the last stop will be Waterford?

Sorry for my ignorance, I am new in Ireland.

    Thanks

There's vending machines around the floor, tap in Waterford as your destination on'em and they'll give you a ticket.

Alternatively, you can book one on irishrail.ie

It'll give you a code to use, which you can enter onto a vending machine to receive a ticket. Might be cheaper, can possibly book a seat as well, if available.

There are displays which will show which platform to board the train at.

    Many thanks,
I just checked the Irishrail website, it looks like its more expensive to buy it online.
    Total Fare: €15.99
    excl. €2 transaction and
    €1 credit card fee

And what is it about booking a seat? It's 5 euros extra online to reserve a seat, Am I not going to get a seat inside train if I purchase the 15.99 euro ticket at the vending machine?

yes usually you need to book a bit in advance to gain any real benefit in the cost of a ticket online

reserving a seat is an option and guarantees you a seat but I would guess that a 0725 train to waterford midweek is unlikely to be any way full so you should get a seat

ok, so i beleive tomorrow I can buy the ticket at vending machine, get on my train and take a seat anywhere inside the train which is free, right?

    Hi,

Are you only going to Waterford by train or will you be coming back.

The fares at the station are:

    €30 Single
€32.30 for a day return (you must come back on the same day as departure)
€39.70 Open Return ( valid for 1 month)

Online your options are what you have said. You don't need to reserve a seat, the train will have plenty of seats. When you get to Heuston the ticket office is beside platform 2. They will take cash or card and will help you with any timetable enquires.

The platform will be displayed on the screens around the station.

Waterford is the last stop on the service. Don't worry after Killenny station the traim reverses and feels as if it is going back to Dublin, but it is still going to Waterford!

If you book online you can pick up your ticket at any vending machine in the station, you will just need the booking reference number!

    Ok Bikeman and Riskymove!
Things are getting clear to me now.

Yes I am going there for an interivew only and coming back on the same day, but I dont know the exact timing of the return. If I buy the 32.30 euro return ticket, do I have to enter in the coming back time as well?

Ok so for you, the best is the day return ticket, you can return on ANY train from Waterford to Dublin tomorrow with that ticket. Just ask for a day return at the booking office.

Best of luck with the interview!

I just noticed on Irishrail.ie that if book on the day of travel, ticket can cost 21.99 Euros, one way.

    http://www.irishrail.ie/webfares

Does it mean I have to pay 44 Euros for sameday return ticket tomorrow at the booking office?

No it will just be 32.20, sometimes online fares booked on the day are more expensive.

No Leap only valid in Dublin.

In future if you are traveling book 7 days or more in advance and its 9.99 each way online.

It will be just be as easy and cheaper to buy the Day Return ticket (€32.30) at Heuston in the morning (from the ticket office, located just off Platform 2 @ the St. John's Road Entrance to the Station) or ticket vending machines in the main concourse.

If you were to buy online now you would pay €31.98 ticket + €1 transaction fee + €2 credit card fee.

The 0725 Heuston - Waterford is formed of either 4 or 6 coaches and you will have no issues in finding a seat, likewise for your return journey later that day seating won't be an issue as the train starts in Waterford.

Some Picture Links to give you an idea:

It gives you the idea of the place, which is the main thing).

Main Concourse, one of the two departrture boards is located here. The departure platform is ONLY DISPLAYED when the train is ready for boarding.

Looking towards the LUAS / Bus entrance, platforms 2 - 5 are behind the camera.

Most of all best of luck in the interview and enjoy the trip :)

    The Wanderer,

Many thanks for the detailed reply and A-Z information about the Hueston Station, I dont think I will have any problem tomorrow :)
BTW, I would not have realized that it was a Lego picture (the first picture) unless you mentioned it :D

I hope weather remains clear tomorrow morning.

Attaching the train's food menu. ;) I will have chicken wrap :)

Thanks for mentioning about this Bikeman1. I would be scared if I didnt know about this because I really felt that the train is going back to Dublin after reaching Killenny station.

P.S. The train became really packed and people were standing for 20 min or so while we were coming back to Dublin. It happened 2-3 stops before Heuston station.

Don't worry. It is a classic reaction for passengers travelling on the Waterford line. I was travelling to Waterford once and a big group of passengers started panicing big time when the train was "heading back to Dublin" and nobody told them to change trains. A quick word and I was their best friend!

If you could keep going straight at Killenny like the old days, you would end up in Portlaoise. FYI!
