Ok, common problem. I have a crush that runs along a wall, with headgate at end of wall. I have a young heifer that is lame in the front left leg, the side nearest the wall. Apart from getting her into the chute backwards, how do ye normally deal with this?
I was thinking of maybe a head halter and tying her up, but she's a red limmy and a little flighty.

Similar set-up. We would catch her from the outside of the head gate. (her head in the gate, her body outside the crush) This is easy for us as the crush is in the slatted shed, and has a gate hung from both ends of it.

Otherwise I have roped the off foot and pulled it in under them to the near side. I've pulled the odd foot forward too, towards the head gate for examination.

We have a left and right hand crush here so it wouldn't be a problem

Run her into crush as normal..
    Catch nose with tongs
Release gate and let her out..
Using tongs and some persuasion lead her back in from headgate side..

Have someone hold tongs or tie them off onto top rail..

    Not perfect but it works

Your a fair man to hold and lead a heifer with just the tongs.
Would you not want to tie her so she can't get too far when you let her out of the crush.

I would either get a rope and try to pull the foot across or tie her backwards in the crush.
Alternatively you could try to tie her behind a gate that swings the right way.
    No simple solution I'm afraid.
Just thought another way is to go real old school like before they had crushes and get a couple of lads to tie her down. A rope with a loop in the middle round the neck bring the 2 ends down under the belly and up behind the back legs and through the loop round the neck. Get a couple of lads on each end back behind her and pull like hell and knock the back legs from under her. You can tie off the ropes at the neck again and you should be able to get at the front foot.

We've an extension past the headgate that holds two footbaths.
It means we can load the from the end of the footbath chute and use the headgate from the opposite side.
We've the guillotine type headgate but I'm pretty sure the automatic headgates are reversible aswell.

In your case if you lined up a gate or two out beyond the headgate and guided her up the makeshift chute you'd catch her no bother.

Might work for ya, if she was quite enough.
