Ok so like alot we are gearing up to buy calves in after the festive period

I do try buy calves off farm but its so hard to get what you want so like others i go to the marts, but the disadvantage is you dont find about what injections the cows got pre calving etc.

So taking that lack of info what injections/vaccinations & dosing program do you give from the day they hit your farm till 20 months ready to be housed the following year. start at day 1 arriving on farming

day1) for example i always feed electrolite as the first feed when they arrive from a mart. But from a farm i dont as less time in mart/on the road.

i always give them electrolite the first evening and morning they are on the farm no matter where they came from.
when let out after the 12 weeks and finished on milk, ill give them a shot of copper and blackleg plus ill get a tonic from Vet Farm in Mullingar and give them a dose of that.
Then is either pour on (Kilo-mec) or injection (bi-mectium plus) every 6-8 weeks over the first summer they are out.
Another tonic on housing for first winter along with a dose for blackleg and Pour on for the lice and again as i see fit.
After housing the first winter the same as above for the first year grasing

no as they are AAX most of the time i take my chances and vaccinate as required. As my numbers are small i can spot problems early on or at least cop something aint right and the vet is only a few miles up the road and passes most evenings

Electrolyte first feed, half and half second. Full milk next day.
    IBR and Bovipast (pneumonia).
    Baycox (coccidiossis).
Milk(replacer), crunch ad lib, straw, top quality haylage.
This year, tested the Calfage on some. They ate it, but not convinced it is worth the extra.
Feed milk twice a day to 6 weeks. Start to reduce it over a week until weaned at 7 weeks. Most manage this, always one or two that are kept on a bit longer, OH does management, so she decides.

If weather any way warm, open shed doors and let them out to "training paddock" as often as possible.
Crunch morphs into nuts around weeks 4-6, then nuts 1-1.5kg up to 4months old or whenever there is good enough grass in front of them.
Done for Blackleg before full turnout. Squeeze bulls at 4-5months.
Worm 2-4 times in year, depending on weather and condition.

IBR and Pneumonia booster pre-housing. Usually a lice treatment in Dec.
This year, silage only as quality good, although looking at hfrs this am, may push them on with nuts for next 6-8 weeks. Last year all got 2kg 16% as silage poor.
Out to grass in Feb(hopefully) and finish hfrs at 18mths, bks at 21-24mths. Depending on grass and fat cover, may get up to 100kg nuts over 5 weeks to finish.
And all the above to "maybe" get a margin of €200:rolleyes:

Did no Autumn calves this year, the time and inputs are too high. If the price of Jan/Feb calves is ok(which is looking unlikely!), I'll do some of them. If not, will buy reared calves when the dairy lads are selling them in May:D
