I am planning to change to a 52/36 setup on my front crank. Will I need to change from a short cage rear derailleur to a medium rear derailleur? I have a long cage rear derailleur - would it be ok to use this instead of a medium cage rd if I do require to change from the short cage? Also - what would be the best cassettte…

You know what you're doing, right?

Assuming you currently have a 110BCD compact crank and a drivetrain that is happy running 50/34, you're just adding two teeth to each chainring so there is no impact on the rear - chainring difference and therefore total drivetrain capacity are the same.
