As far as I can remember the first one is for a car with digital display and AC - I think after about 2006 .
The second one was used in the pre 2006 - these had had a rotary control for the blower and sounds like what you have ; this was how they usually failed also - first speeds 1,2,3 (as they were fed through the resistor pack) and eventually no 4 failed also .
This was the case with the Renault Grand Scenic so I would imagine the Megane etc would be similar .
Your best option would be to ask a dealer - they should be able to tell you which one is fitted from the reg .
    Hope this helps :)

The digital climate control vs manual aircon is a spec difference rather than age.

You should take the old one out and look at the loom too, not sure about Renaults but Peugeots have a habit of melting and burning the connector where the resistor plugs in. If the connector is burned then it gets messy. I had to buy a new resistor and then cut the connector off the loom and then solder the 5 wires directly to the pins on the resistor. It was a pig but was better than replacing the entire loom.

Yeah, same with the Renaults I believe
