Total newbie to running but I'm looking to book a holiday next year and would like to couple it with a 10k/21k run. Came across this one but can't tell if it's open to everybody - http://www.nicesemimarathon.com/v14/AN/.

Has anyone ran the above? Any other suggestions?

It's open to everybody but note that as it's in France you will need a medical certificate. They provide a form that you can download and ask your doctor to fill out. If it were me I would choose my holiday location and then look for a race - you're not that likely to be far away from one unless you go to a small island and even then...

Berlin one sounds good. Just so I can familiarise myself with the standard of runners, will there be people running it in 120-140 mins or are all the times going to be way below that?

The 2013 results are up on the website. The website localization is a little sketchy, but if you select "Läufer", you to get results for runners (as opposed to inline skaters and hand-bikers) and then you can pick an age group and select male or female results. I picked the category M75, for example: very few of them finish in less than two hours, and some of them take well over three.

I did the Nice half marathon this year.
Well organised event, open to all.
Stayed an extra few days, loads of places to see, excellent transport system.

I have signed up for the Berlin half next year, flights booked but have not looked at hotels/apartments yet.

    Are you doing Berlin?
I am staying for 4 nights.

Anyone any tips on where to stay for doing touristy things and getting around ?

    Apartment or hotel?

The Adina Aparthotel is great, and just around the corner from the main train station (train ride direct from the airport). Otherwise you could stay just south of the Tiergarten (near the zoo). Lots of hotels and apartments in that area.

I remembered quite a time ago someone having a book of road races in France. It covered the whole year, Le Bipede it was called.

I just checked there and its still published, with an electronic copy available.
It claims to have 6000 events for 2014, price €9.90.
    (downside it all in French)

    The German calendar is here.

You can select dates and/or distances and/or a part of the country and it tells you what's on.

There are two ways of picking a part of the country: you can select one of the DLV-affiliated associations under "Landesverband" (basically just picking a "Bundesland" or state) or you can enter a placename (or, better, a postcode) under "Ort" and then choose within how many km of that place you want to search.

There is a paper version available to anybody who sends them the postage, but the online version is probably handier to use.

It's all in German, but for some events the pictures are more than enough. If you find something that potentially looks interesting but you're having trouble figuring out the details, just ask.

Fiddled a bit with the URL to make it work and it led me to this one:
    Andechs Trail

The site says registration is opening on December 28. (Seems that it took about a month to fill the places last year.) They seem to think that trail runners who can manage 20 km runs elsewhere will be well able for 15 in Andechs if they focus on the free beer at the finish.

From listening between the lines on one of the recent parkrun podcasts it sounded like they might be relaxing those rules soon. If that is just going to be in relation to the likes of parkrun distance events or anything up to marathons or not, I'm not sure. But they have said that needing a medical cert before you could even run a 5km was the main reason they don't have parkrun France yet.
