Does it still eat batteries for fun?

Setting your favorite team (regardless of which sport) gives you live updates during matches. and a reminder days before each match

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,845 ✭✭✭Jet Black

Quite like it. Booked a hotel, flights and it comes up on the lock screen the day of check in. Click on it and it brings you to the email.

Also stuff I bought from Amazon. Gives the details of the order and when it was diapached.

If you set a reminder for work at say 9pm it will give you a reminder at the time you have to leave based on journey time.

I find it very useful and use it a lot. Best time i ever used it was about 3 months ago and Google Now told me about 10 hours before a flight that it was delayed by 3 hours. I was able to rearrange my day while all the other Aer Lingus passengers were stuck in the airport for hours waiting. Had the official Aer Lingus app installed as well which doesn't do sh1t

How do you get the stuff from Amazon to show up. Are you talking about the American Amazon? All the stuff from UK never showed on mine.

Has LUAS, DART, Dublin Bus and Bus Eireann time tables now too.

Was very surprised at how accurate it was to track my trip back to Dublin from out in the sticks of Cavan!

Only orders from .com have ever showed up for me, but they've made fairly big changes in the last month or so, so maybe it includes .co.uk now too? Google seems to think a few new amazon domains have gained support.

Your Amazon orders emails need to be sent to your Gmail account used on the phone.

You don't need Google now for that anyway, the Amazon app does all that, sends you messages as appropriate, including from the co.uk site.

It's built into the Google search app

Google now is very good, but it is all based on you using the Google Search engine and GMail.
If you do that, it will show you flight information, tracking information, car rental information and appointments that it gets reading your e-mail.
It can also do TV Shows updates and notification.
From the Google search part, if you search for example for Yamamori Sushi Dublin, it will automatically give you the time and directions to that on Google Now, as it assumes you want to go there.
It will also give you updates from your most visited websites, like a blog.

Basically, as you use it more and you use Google services, it will learn more about you and display more relevant information.

I find it pretty good use it mostly for stock prices and Amazon tracking but it comes into its own when you are away from home or in a different country. Great for finding good restaurants without having to search.

It's part of the Google eco system so you probably already have it but it's also in the store alright.

I can't find it in the playstore and I have a note 3

That's because it's not an app, it's built into Google search

You can enable Now in the Google search settings.

I'm giving it a go with location services on (of course), live wallpaper, sent about 6 texts and a few posts on FB.

After 5hrs the battery is at 78% which is only a slight decrease in performance with Google Now.

I find it is ok on battery. Does use the Gps/location at intervals to know where you are so that it can deliver the goods. I use it a lot, especially in the UK. Was walking up to Paddington station the other day and it popped up the next trains to Heathrow because I have got on that train before.

Of course we all know where this is going - Walk into Dundrum shopping centre in a couple of months time and I've no doubt "offers" from shops nearby will start to pop up on google now, along with a bar code or something to avail of the offerr, and pay using your google wallet (if it's ever supported here)....

New update sent out earlier this week
    http://www.androidauthority.com/google-search-342884/

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,832 ✭✭✭Dr.Winston O'Boogie

I find google now rips through my battery on the S4. 100% at 8.30am but about 30% by 5.30pm. When I check what is eating the battery its "google services", which is that app.

I stopped location updates on google now so it doesn't keep checking my location to give me directions/traffic updates and its much more effective on the battery.

Still annoying that I had stop that.

had a good look through the update yesterday and its now looking really good. Lots more stuff showing up.

Has anyone any idea on how to get the TV providers working? Supposedly Google Now will give you recommendations on what to watch.

One cool thing I've only recently discovered is if you're listening to music and don't know the song just ask Google and it will be identified.

Google now has really come into its own. I pretty much use it every day for getting directions, making phone calls, sending texts, alarm, reminders etc. Very rare that there's a misunderstanding with a command.

It still won't make me a sandwich though!

Hint: Try "OK Google, make me a sandwich"

Google Now irritates me a lot even though I use it daily.

I do my regular Irish accent, usually doesn't pick up much.

I put on the most over dramatic American accent I can and suddenly it hears ever feckin word!

What accent do you have? I've got a Dubliner inner city one. Not extremely strong or anything and it works for me mostly just fine.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,035 ✭✭✭nedd

maybe check that you have the language set correctly. it may be set to English US.

But you are from Carlow so I doubt many people can understand you never mind a computer :-)

If you want it to listen for "Ok Google" while the screen is on, you have to set it to English US.

What do you mean by this?

Do you mean using it on any screen or if it's on the lock screen?

Any time the screen is on.
The options for it are greyed out if you don't have english US set as your language.

I'm on lollipop, but I have the option for any screen detection with English UK. Maybe this is lollipop only.

It is set to American English, I have it on that so that I can say Okay Google from anywhere, even works when the screen is off... Sometimes.
