Warning!! Glen of The Downs Wicklow Diversion

I noted with interest today that the Glen of the Downs Northbound hard shoulder has been closed with a huge neon flashing sign saying "CYCLISTS DIVERT"

The sign is past all junctions that you can divert onto!

So what do you do? Ride backwards on the wrong side of the road?

Beware if you are riding out in this area tomorrow, particularly on any group ride as the closure leaves you only one option to go out onto the carriageway.

Fcuking moronic considering the amount of crashes on that side of the road (apparently the reason it is closed is to alter the road camber that has been causing the crashes)

Also no directions (as per usual) as to WHERE to divert to..Classic

Probably your best option is either to stay higher up and descend into Kilmac or leave the N11 at Greystones and go through Greystones village (have a nice espresso at The Happy Pear) and go over Windgates and Bray

    Yes,

I wonder did some concerned commuter (either cyclist or driver) ask the council to sort out the barriers and erecting a do not cycle sign after the last turn-off was the cheapest response????
Moving the barriers in off the roadway another 1m would be more useful.

In fairness to the council though in it's current poorly thought out shape it is dangerous. A truck coming up from Rosslare would have nowhere to go should he come up on a cyclist there at busy times.

Absolutely crazy signage-no info whatsoever so if you're not local (or in some cases even if you are) as it gives you no idea where to go as an alternative.

By way of warning my brother came upon the aftermath an accident on Thursday (only heard about it today) at this spot where a cyclist was hit exactly where the hard shoulder is closed so I'd reckon the signage is a crude afterthought with no consideration given to cyclists-beware on that stretch folks

It has been like that since before last weekend unfortunately. I don't know what they were thinking. As a fairly confident cyclist on the road, having to share the inside lane with cars along that stretch is pretty hairy and I don't particularly fancy it. It must absolutely terrify some folk. And of course by the time you come to it there is absolutely no way out. There's nowhere to go. You've gone 2km past the last exit of the N11 and cycling back down the hard shoulder against the traffic is equally insane.

The NRA have responsibility for this road not the local county council. I've noticed problems on other dual carriageways which the NRA control too such as the N7. It seems the NRA only consider motor traffic when performing any work.

    Back to normal now.

    On another boards forum I read speculation that;

1 : The road surface was scraped to improve grip after a serious accident last week (northbound)

2 : A combination of the tight corner and the mobile phone signal dropping out right on the corner may be a reason for some of the cars bouncing off the concrete barrier there as drivers fumble with their phones instead of watching the road (southbound)

My own opinion is that it was the usual end of year manic spend spend spend of the road maintainance budget

I think this may have been posted after someone tackled the work guys about the lack of space and thought given to cyclists while the work was being carried on...... a sort of Cover Your Ass sign if you like!!

Thank goodness its all cleared now.....
