I've been thinking of engaging the services of a PT, just maybe once or twice a week for a month or so to get me off to a good start for weight loss and general cleaning up my act!
Just wondering how best to find one? I've previously gone to my local gym where I was a member, and got an exercise plan, and been sent on my merry way. It probably took the girl there about 20 min altogether. I'd like a bit more this time (because i didn't get far with it last time) . I'd like a bit of hand holding to really get off to a decent start. I'd like a bit of input on both diet and exercise. I could probably do with someone standing beside me and actually shouting at me to keep me going.

I had a quick google, and I can't really find much in my area. I thought there might be a website directory or something, but if there is, I can't find it!
    Thanks!

Thanks for that. I've considered crossfit, but I'm not sure I have enough time to give it to justify the monthly cost. I also don't think my current fitness levels would suffice. And I want to get a bit of one on one nutrition advice too!
I'll have a look at that lads Facebook page. Only 5 out of 10 stars though!

all crossfit boxes should offer one to one personal training also and keep in mind that crossfit is completely scalable to your level anyway

Try the crossfit gym for a month or two and see how you get. Shouldn't cost any more than hiring a PT and they will give you nutrition advise.

Thanks for that. I'll try to pluck up the courage. Those photos on Facebook are a big daunting tbh!

Looking for a trainer myself, based in North Dublin City? I also have a heart condition, so a trainer who knows his stuff and who isn't gonna push me beyond my limits would be good :)

James Hanley who's on here http://www.revolutionfitness.ie/
    Robbie Bourke in glanevin http://www.robbiebourke.com/
you'd be doing well with either of these guys! with your condition If you go to a PT make sure they make you wear a HR monitor as a requirement, if they don't stear clear!

There wasn't on their sites. Ok, I'll make sure the PT makes me wear a monitor.

How much is the average session nowadays?

Do you own a HR monitor? If not I'd invest in one.

Don't mention a HR monitor to the PT! If they don't suggest you wear 1 with a Heart condition walk away! I've seen it range from €15 (honestly) - €75 per hour! I've seen ****e expensive pt's and ****e cheap pt's, it's a minefield! The lads I mentioned are 2 of the best around & in your general area you asked for!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,325 ✭✭✭Omega28

No I don't own a monitor! Might invest in one now.

My main concern with a PT is the fact it's a minefield, and that they'll have me lifting heavy weights that I'm not suppose to be doing

75e is a bit steep session, being a college student :)

The one I booked is €20 a session. I thought if was cheap, but I am outside the capital, which helps I'd say! Hopefully it's not too good to be true

You need to do a full case history with your trainer! You should also be asked for a Dr's letter explaining what you can & can't do! You do know you can say no if the trainer tries to push you into something you can't do???

jasus if any of that even came up in a session then i think the trainer/client relationship was over for me.

I use HR monitors years ago and havent used them since - the art of coaching is knowing how much and when you can push someone. In the first month most people need so much mobility and basic strength work there is ZERO need for the HR to be excessively high for an extended period.

I've been exercising for some time, moderate level and haven't used a monitor. I'm not doubting that it would be useful.

I'm gonna look for an experienced trainer who deals with all forms of clients, I don't even mind going outside of North Dublin City for the right trainer.

Under normal circumstances yep, I agree but if the client has a heart condition (sub in other potential life threatening conditions here) I'm not risking their health & my livelihood by not taking a full case history, getting Dr's clearance and using whatever possible tool to keep them within their safe limits, in this case a heart monitor!

Just a quick update... Have had 3 sessions with my pt, and it's just what I needed to do to give myself a kick up the bum. I'm embarrassingly unfit, but it's ok, because I'm doing something about it.
I've been using MFP to track my good intake the last few days, and I LOVE it!! I'm so much more aware of what I'm eating. I haven't quite managed cold turkey on chocolate, but the improvement is dramatic nonetheless. My only problem now is that I obviously won't see results overnight, so I need to keep reminding myself that I didn't put on my extra weight in a week, so I won't get it off in a week either.
