Is there a public database where one can search on past cases and sentences? I recently heard that a former colleague was sentenced to several years in Mountjoy and I'd like to find out some details of the case.

Hmmm, nope cos its a paywall and the case I'm looking for would only have been a month ago approx.

So what I'm getting here is that there's no suggestions from people who know for sure. Is that's the answer, fair enough.

Speaking for myself I look up media coverage on criminal cases all the time from a few months old to over a century old. The answer to you actual question is no there is no database only techniques many of us use.

The public case database is bailii but it's not what you want.

Ok, thanks for that - never came across bailii before. A concern is that media coverage might be hit and miss - not everything covered?

Sounds like an "opportunity" for someone.

Not really which is why there isn't data available. Anything that gets to written judgement stage is likely reported on in the media and the rest would be under the remit of the CSO. Admittedly more data on sentencing is needed but wouldn't be in the format you're after. I'm afraid Google is probably the best way to find it, after that it might be paying a sub to a newspaper archive.

You might find something on courts.ie
