Could someone please help me with this.

I have an Eircom Zyxel black wifi router in the kitchen which does the living area but the wifi is very poor in the bedroom. I have an existing cat5 cable going from the back of the router in the kitchen to the bedroom already for a dvr.
I want to plug in a second eircom zyxel router into this cable into 1 of the 4 ports at the back to act as a wifi repeater and I can plug my dvr into this router then as well, but when I do this it wont work properly and is knocking out the internet in the kitchen then too , its like its bypassing the router in the kitchen to go straight to the bedroom

Is the a setting in any of the routers that can be changed??

I have logged on to the router itself to check but I don't know exactly what to look for

    Any help is greatly appreciated

do you not need to bridge the two modems?

Go to 192.168.1.254 > network on the left and then > Internet(wan) under "General" change from routing to bridge Mode > Now click apply down the bottom and wait for it to apply

your second modem should be connected to port 1 on the first modem, you will also have to assign a different subnet on the second modem

Ignore the bridging thing, You just need to go into the settings on your second router and disable DHCP, Also give the router an IP in the same subnet as your main router.

I tried to change the ip from 192.168.1.254 to 192.168.1.255 and I have to reset the router as it just freezes and I cant get back into it. I turned off dhcp first

192.168.1.255 is not a valid IP address on that network. The range is 192.168.1.1 - 192.168.1.254.

Here is how you do it

connect a laptop or pc to lan port 2 on the second router (this is important)

log onto second router (192.168.1.254) password is wifi key if d1000 or broadband1 if p660t1a_ipv6 or p660t1_v3

change the wifi ssid and password & channel number to match router one

    save settings

change encapsulation to bridged ethernet (eth1)

set the default gateway address to 192.168.1.254 and set dns primary to 8.8.8.8 and secondary dns to 8.8.4.4

    save settings

set dhcp to dhcp relay and enter 192.1.68.1.254

change router ip address to 192.168.1.253

    save settings

connect lan port 1 on router 2 (this is important as lan port 1 or eth1 becomes a wan port) to lan port 1 on router 1 (router 1 being the router connected to the phone line

if you did it right the dsl light on router 2 stays off but the internet light will turn green

you only see one wifi signal but now you got 2 sources thus double the signal range and strength (this way your laptop will automatically jump to the strongest signal source when you move about your house)

Thanks so much for the concise explanation. I have spent days trawling the net looking for a solution.
I just got eFibre. The modem/router has now been moved beside the tv which means I have to run a long cable to my non-wifi Mac Pro. This is just a short term solution, I don't want the cable anymore for obvious reasons.
I have tried various solutions in the past, including wifi repeater plugs. I want something different now.
Here's the plan: I want to use the old eircom d1000 router as a bridge (I think!). The idea is to use the d1000 in my office, wired to my Mac to access the net but without wiring the d1000 to the f1000. I believe this is called using the router/modem in bridging mode, maybe I'm wrong - please correct.
I followed the above instructions to the last step. I'm not sure how to change router ip address to 192.168.1.253. I put it in where I thought it should go but when I clicked apply I just got a loading message which went on for several minutes so I closed the window, not good I know...
I'll try the steps again while I wait for a reply to my queries:
1 Am I going in the right direction, i.e. should I be attempting to bridge? I am basically trying to turn the d1000 into a wifi-card...
2 How do I change router ip address to 192.168.1.253?
3 Do I then need to connect via PPPoE as other threads seem to suggest?

    Thanks for any advice!
