    Hi,

I need to get the following work done on my 05 opel corsa 1.2L

    2 Inner Tierods replaced
2 front droplinks and 2 brake disks replaced

I was just wondering instead of getting a garage to order the specific parts would it work out cheaper ordering the parts myself from micks garage or something and ask a garage to do the work

Only thing is Im not sure what are the best parts to choose, seems a lot of variety, maybe would be best to just leave everything to a garage..?

    Any help appreciated

Chances are the garage can get the parts at the same price as you or cheaper, plus they already know which ones are ****e and not worth the money!

Or there's the case where the garage doesn't care what parts go on, and wants to maximise profits.

    If in doubt, OEM

    Cheers for that,

Where can I find the OEM parts, is there a website I can check? or should it be in my car manual?

Sorry am a bit clueless when it comes to cars!

If your replacing the brake discs its advisable to change pads as well. Plus you'll need will need wheel alignment when track rods are replaced.

Most mechanics rather order the parts themselves to ensure they get the right parts.

But if you want to buy parts your self, Local motor factors will give you advice when buying at the counter.

Unless your fitting the parts yourself it's probably better to let the mechanic order the parts.

I'm a bit of a chancer and will try a lot off basic jobs on the car but not sure would I take on changing brake discs and pads if I was clueless. I'm open to correction but I believe the caliper has a piston that needs to be pressed back with a special tool, otherwise you run the risk of fuping it up. Not sure if this is the case on the Corsa.

Have worked on toyotas, mazdas and fords myself. Had a Vectra at one stage but done very little work on the underside of it. Changed the brake discs/ pads in the back of a mondeo but unlike your scenario was changing the calipers and all as they had siezed under the car. Successfully changed the brake shoes in the rear drums of Mazdas/ toyotas with lots of swearing and bleeding fingers later but their a bit different. Not sure would I go about changing brake discs on their own if I was clueless.

Drop links should be handy enough. You'd just need an open ended spanner and allen keys if they are the same as toyota (possibly not though). Same goes for tie rod ends.

If your buying the parts yourself and getting a garage to fit them you'd want to check in with the garage first if thats ok. That would be grand with a lot of garages but with more they'd soon show you the door. I'm guessing its because they make money on the parts they fit as they buy them at trade prices and charge the punter the retail price. Its part of how they make money aside from labour. Also if they fit inferior parts they risk damaging their reputation so probably want to know the source of the parts.

Also, be careful about buying of ebay as it can be a bit of a false economy. I bought bushings for a vectra of ebay once and like marsh mallows they were.

Sorry if I seem condascending towards you but thats not the intention

True, thats why the best plan is to find a garage you trust and stick with them.

Get three quotes inc labour , be specific in what you want done.

You say the inner tie rods need to be replaced - I presume you mean the rods attached to the steering rack .
These can be extremely difficult unless you have the proper tool for the job :(- and as its steering related you want to make sure everything is tightened up properly afterwards .

Does anyone bring their own food to a restaurant ?

    Why not?

No, but plenty of us 'cook' at home :).

Also a lot of indie garages are more than happy for the customer to supply the parts, that way they don't have to replace them if there's any problems later on.
