I want to import 46 year old Triumph Vitesse, to restore. It doesn't have an MOT, it's been in a barn for 8 years. It will come in on the back of a lorry.

"Within 7 days of your vehicle arriving in Ireland, you must book an appointment with the NCTS for it to be inspected".

What! It's going to take 2 years to restore at least, (spare time) and that's being optimistic.

I've been told that if you import it from the North, different rules apply, but I'm not to sure? Answer anyone?

book your appointment and call by with it on the truck. They may not complete the procedure if it isn't road-worthy but you will have met your obligation

(PS it USED to be within 24 hours btw....)

I have done this many times. the Customs are not really interested in your E200 V.R,T. that much, so long as you pay it when the car is ready for the road. They know that you can not re-registered it until you do that. They are far more interested in "Ringers" &" High Value Cars" & rightly so. I sold one of the 1st Trumpy 2000 in Ireland in 1965/66 to a solicitor in Waterford, he traded in a White Ford Council 375, I think the Reg. No. was WI 7311, I wish I had it now . It was a beauty at that time. I remember getting 100+ mph on the then newly opened NAAS Dual Carriageway. When your Triumph it is ready to go on the road, just present it at you local V.R.T. centre, by appointment, with all your paperwork in order, and you should have no problem. Best of luck, and happy driving in a lovely car. :D:D

Sorry, Dark Stanley, I did not read your post right, I thought you were on about a 2000. However, I have a friend who had a Vitesse many years ago, and she loved it to bits. It was considered a, what would be called, a very COOL car to-day, nearly 50 years ago!! But the same would apply in relation to V.R.T. Again good luck with it. :D:D

The thing is when you go to pay your VRT, you have to produce an MOT, NCT or the equivalent certificate of road Worthiness! How on earth can a 40, 50, 60 year old motor pass the emissions test? If your car is really vintage with cable brakes, well that's got no chance of passing the brake test.
This is just another piece of legislation that some dick in suit didn't think through.

That is not correct. As your car is pre Jan. 1980, it does not need a N.C.T. Even on post 1980, you do not need a N.C.T./ M.O.T. for the purpose of having the car inspected for the V.R.T.

I know a pre 1980 car doesn't need an NCT. I also own a 1970 Ford Cortina. What I meant is this, and I quote from the 2013 AGM of the Western Veteran & Vintage Motor Club Ltd, "It now seems that a car must be passed as roadworthy before it can be VRT cleared and registered here (Ireland). This poses a problem for anyone wanting to import a restoration project."
You see the legislation has changed.

no,I agree, the situation is if it has an MoT or equivalent from elsewhere they won't need to inspect it for roadworthiness. If it doesn't they just need to check that it is a viable car rather than a derelict heap of scrap. (no idea why btw, doesn't matter to them so long as stump up your dosh)

edit, having seen your latest post. That is someones interpretation of the regulations, ignore it.it is simply a visual exam.(they did my Camper in the car park)

From my experience with both the Ennis & Limerick N.C.T. centres, the person doing the V.R.T. just check the VIN. No. & the Mileage. You cannot get a N.C.T. until 24 hours after it is cleared, it takes that time to get it up on their system. They have never checked anything else on any of the cars that I have cleared.

Even when you do get a vintage car NCT tested for PSV use, it will be tested only on equipment fitted, so if its only got cable brakes going to the back wheels and those cable brakes are functioning correctly, then it will pass the brake test.
The NCT was modelled on the UK MOT where all cars of every year had to be MOTed up until recently.

Why not? They'll only be looking for another 700-odd yoyos in back tax.

NCT registration penpushers around your way will be on the lookout now!
