Is there any imminent resurgence in values of used petrol models?

    I have ordered a new Audi A3 saloon 1.4 petrol 140 bhp.

All the dealers I visited before making my decision advised me to get a diesel for the residual value but my annual mileage is < 10k and mainly urban, so I decided on petrol.

Is there any indication that values for used small cc petrol cars are getting any better than heretofore or will I still take a greater hit in 3-4 years time when I trade in my petrol-engined A3 Saloon than if it were a diesel?

I know I'm paying less initially for the new petrol with will the depreciation still be disproportionally greater?

Right now diesels are all the rage; hard to say whether or not that will change in a few years.

For your driving type and mileage it makes no difference anyway; a diesel car is not for you (the repairs on a diesel car for parts that wear through improper use are likely to eat into any benefit you get from resale either way).

As Djimi said, any extra depreciation would be wiped from maintenance on the diesel at your mileage.
Of course they know that and would get your maintenance too!
