Female Bikes

    Hi guys,

Been cycling myself for a year now. My OH recently said she would like to get into cycling with me and so I am looking for a bike for her at the moment. I have found a few second hand bikes for good money that I would happily buy but I have a question.

I cant seem to find much on female bikes. Can she use a male 54cm or 55cm frame bike?

Thanks for the help in advance.

I don't see why not. Female specific bikes have a more relaxed geometry and shorter reach (and of course a different paintjob ), but mainly I think it's a marketing exercise. If the bike fits, it fits.

It's great that your OH is getting into cycling too by the way, a lot of lads here would be jealous of that!

Are you talking full road bikes here? if so I really would not go out of your way to get her a women-specific one. Just make sure she gets the right size. There are some smaller frames that accommodate smaller wheels (650mm as opposed to 700mm), but you are then limited in terms of upgrade options

Just go for a bike she likes the look and feel of

Thats what I was thinking, she would be tall enough and has used my 56cm Trek before. It is slightly too big for her so a 54 or 55 might be the job. I will get a bike fit done and then go looking for a bike. Cheers!

I also have a similar requirement re Her Indoors, and have also been looking at some options.

I have had a look at the Boardman Comp Fi 2014 which is well priced but the component spec is not great.

They say they have female specific geometry on the frameset on this bike and also female specific saddle and narrower female specific bars. Women, generally having shorter torso v men would require a shorter top tube I'd assume, with compact frame design there probably isn't so much of an issue with bar height.

Don't worry at all about whether it's a women's specific bike or not . I'm a woman & I've 3 road bike, all are "men's" bike but they fit & that's the important thing.

Look at any women's race here & most women are on "men's" bikes. Most change the handlebars to narrower ones with a shorter reach (compact bars) and a women's specific saddle but otherwise it's all just marketing.
