2001 Subaru Forester vs Landrover Discovery

    2.0 Turbo Foreseter / 2.5 Discovery (TD5 I think)

    Both Auto.

Not sure if the Disco will be commercial and if not im guessing there will be more rear space for a baby seat?

Fuel cost would be near similar id imagine? with Higher maintence cost for the Disco.

But which one would be the all round best and why. I will be picking one up after xmas. Drive to Dublin From Mullingar mon-fri and will be towing a single axle Ifor Williams box 6x4 (approx) on occasions and a bit of off-road for the fun of it ;).

Personally I'd go for the Forester. There cheap as chips and go on and on and on and on. Plus maintenance is easy on the wallet as well.

    What trim level are they?
If the Foz has the heated seats, moonroof etc I'd go for that. Great car.
Note that 30mpg is probably the best you'll get, usually more like 21mpg.

    Links?

Discovery is a better towing machine and it's a proper capable off-roader and will go where the forester cannot. Auto Foresters wont have a low ratio box if that's going to be important to you.

TD5 is a generally very reliable engine and the Discovery II is generally quite reliable too. Look for ones with coil springs; generally the ones that aren't top model 7 seaters have coil springs. They tend to be one of the few areas that give trouble. The air suspension on the rear can leak, which causes the compressor to run all the time to compensate, which eventually kill the compressor too.

Turbo Subarus don't whether they are manual or auto afaik.
So if the OP does want low ratio he's confined to normally aspirated, 2.0 in the case of the forester and not a tremendously powerful one afaik. A 2.5 legacy/outback might be a better machine (nicer interior maybe, bigger backseat and boot room too) but the 2.5s of that vintage seem to have a bad rep for head gaskets. Not rover bad like, but...

I'm all for Foresters, picked one up myself recently, so just throwing out some info rather than knocking them.

Is the forester not petrol (boxer) ?

I have '04 2.0xt, great fun but absolutely guzzles petrol --- even when not towing something.
Fairly short oil changes needed also (if its the petrol)

Leather, winter pack and heated seats

Hang on... Just a 6*4 trailer occasionally?

Just get a regular diesel car if you're doing big mileage surely?

I spotted a 03 Volvo S80 2.4 Auto Diesel.....have a 2.0 Turbo petrol at present and the size and comfort is unbeatable.

I've wanted a jeep for a good while but always end up with a big saloon :/

Now you have me confused again :(

    Colm's right,

I had to re read first post,

I originally thought ONE trip mullingar to dublin on a Friday .
5 days a week :eek:go for the 2.4 Volvo DSL , you'll rob one at the moment.

You'd have the capital cost of a disco or forester paid out in fuel again after only a few weeks, maybe buy a vintage 56 euro tax defender for your 4x4 weekend kicks aswell.

The 03 S80 is going for 1500 Private, no tax or test.

Per month the S80 DSL should cost around €355.93 to run including tax.

The Disco would be 446.42 but with Higher maintenance costs and at 80 kph :D

Humm maybe I'll be getting a Big saloon again :o

That's an awful lot of lost uncomfortable noisey hours compared to 130kmh .

There's great value at the moment 4 or 5 k will get you some car, well up in the years once you go over 2000 cc, because of the value available I'd spend a bit more than 1500.

Why not look at a Pajero or Land cruiser.

Why not look at a Pajero or Land cruiser.

Still have the same fall downs as a Discovery; slow, uneconomical and designed for fields.

Designed for work really.....Disco is a bit more refined and the pajero is well know for awful fuel economy

For what its worth, I've used Pajeros, terranos, patrols and troopers of the early 2000s and the disco hands down beats them for comfort.

The seats are very supportive. Switch from the C5 to the disco and its the first thing I notice

I've driven most Jeeps and the Disco and RangeRover (P38) are by far the most refined of them all and are priced around the same if your patient.

Little work out below of the approx running costs between the Disco and S80. Ive included a petrol S80 as that's what I have now

Land rovers are dirt and way overpriced. you will forever be fixing a landrover, go for the subaru they are so reliable will go on forever and thy sound great

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 81,220 ✭✭✭✭biko

Thanks for your valuable unbiased input "Subaru Guy" ;)

OP, maybe a car rather than suv would be better for you considering your travelling.
Foz will drink a hell of a lot of petrol even when not towing.
Do some calculations on the various cars recommended so far.

There was a time that trolls put a little bit of effort and subtlety into their craft. And their usernames.
