What is the policy for determining where one might be placed?

Can you request your area? Would they locate you 'away from home'?

    Thanks

    You can be sent anywhere.

If you have a situation such as children etc you can make a case on welfare grounds to be located closer to home. as a student with children i was placed 90 km from home, as a probationer it was 50km

Would people from the Northwest of NI generally get County Donegal?

You can be sent anywhere - if you don't have a case for welfare be prepared to go anywhere. I can see a large percentage going to dublin

No. You will be allocated top wherever the Commissioner believes Gardaí are needed. Dublin lads and ladies usually get the city mainly because of the sheer demand for Gardaí in the city. As the border is no longer policed to the level it was there is not as much need for Gardaí in that region.
I would say that married Gardaí will be reasonably facilitated close to their home place. This would mean of course that single Gardaí can be sent anywhere

Ah this old chestnut is asked every time. As posters already said you can be stationed anywhere. Unfortunately some people think they will be stationed fairly close to home and get a huge shock when they aren't.

The rules are you cannot be stationed within 80 km of your home. When people go into Phase 1 they are asked to provide a list of all their aunts, uncles, grandparents and addresses for them. You cannot be stationed near them either.

I would imagine city stations will get the vast majority of new members. Unfair I think as the country stations are equally under pressure for manpower

After your stint in templemore, you will be sent to a "designated training station" to carry on your training...or so ive been told, open to correction on this.
