Ok we all remember the days before regulations on additives ruled out all the tasty tasty poisons we used to ingest but what were the ones that always took your money.
Chocolate cigarettes? Candy sticks? Golf Balls?

For me it was always the sour bubble gums. Eye Poppers and Witches Brew stole many a pocket money from me...And probably half my teeth.

Refreshers, Hi-Sours, Desperate Dan Bars (with the black pieces inside, friends said they were cancerous :p), Roy of the Rover bars, Stinger bars, Chomp, Touch-down, Frosties. Loads more.

Hi-Sours were the devil. I remember having competitions to see who could fit the most in their mouth at once. (14 I think)

Yes, they had apple or lemon flavours from what I called. Many used to run them under the tap before even eating them! I was a big fan, loved sour tasting sweets, still do.

    Well that's just cheating :(

I think sour sweets need a revival. Bring back the golden age of hi sours and eye poppers where everything else had sour versions too like chewits and nerds.

Oh and bring back bubble kings. They were great

    So we're in agreement then?
Everyone is beating up local shop owners to get their preferred sweets reinstated.

    Also
I want a giant bowl full of nerds, dweebs and gobstoppers

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,821 ✭✭✭fussyonion

Haha yes I used to run the EyePoppers under the tap before eating them, too!
    God, they were sour.

I also loved Fruit Basket-a pack containing three or four really fruity sweets..same texture as EyePoppers but these weren't sour.
    Eat-A-Yolks were good too.

Nowadays I still love a Cadbury Eclair (classic forever!) and I'm a sucker for Wham! bars....they sell them in bags now.

Can you still get wibbly wobbly wonders?

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 1,151 ✭✭✭rovoagho

You can in Cork, but from previous discussions it seems only some parts of the country stock these and other of the older ice creams.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 51,054 ✭✭✭✭Professey Chin

I think ill set up an old ice cream shop. All the good stuff :pac:

I recognise the wrapper but I don't think I've ever had one. Apparently they were like walnut whips! Nom

Little Devils, Little Angels and Dracula ice lolls are no more. Loop the Loops were my fave though. For a while they had plastic sticks that you could collect to slot together and build things.

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 1,151 ✭✭✭rovoagho

You can still get loop the loops down here too. Draculas were available as a limited edition last year, there was a vote on what people wanted to come back.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 51,054 ✭✭✭✭Professey Chin

I dont remember Draculas but now I want one......

    Anyone remember Prairie Bars ?

Fondant filled bars - similar to Frys Chocolate cream but about half the size and in a variety of flavours ... strawberry, mint etc ....

Or was it all in a dream ????????????

    nom nom

Pink Panther bars - pink chocolate that tasted, now that I think of it, quite repulsive.
Fizzle sticks - I'd cheerfully choke a granny for one of these now.

Very tasty bar. Nearly flake like chocolate with caramel type filling.

Dip Dabs is another one (this site has loads of scans of 80s crisps and sweets).

Vague recollection of the comics (which apparently they dont do anymore).
Cant remember ever trying the gum....but that could be it melding in with all other gum from the past :pac: Im surprised I still have teeth :o

Actually, I remember eating paper became pretty popular for a while and I've no idea why. It just tasted like communion :/

Used to be manufactured by Topps in Cork, who were also responsible for the Garbage Pail Kids stickers that used to litter the place. My dad used to supply them, so we used to have shedloads of the stuff. It was disgusting. :)

I was in Galway last week for exams, and bought a bag of teeth-curlingly sour sweets in Aunty Nellys sweetshop... they are great!

There's a retro sweetshop near me, I have banned myself from the place!

I miss the proper snowballs... the stuff they have inside them now, just isn't the same :(

Dandy bar. It was orange with black crystals through it. Pull the fillings clean out of your head.

The amount of people who tried to convince me those crystals were everything from dirt to spider eggs is amazing.

I'm pretty sure I belived a few of the stories...I was not a clever child

I can't eat any of those chews any more, they literally do pull the fillings out of my back teeth. It's happened twice, last time with a Refresher. Sucking them just isn't the same. :(

    5p crisps!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29,089 ✭✭✭✭LizT

I remember getting a pound on Sunday after mass, going to the shop and being able to get a can of coke, a dairy milk, a packet of taytos, a bag of penny sweets and still having change!

    5p crisps!

Barry McGuigan and A-Team crisps were 5p.

Highland toffee bars were murder for that.

Big Time bars (Caffreys) were great for pulling out the loose teeth. You can get them online.

Leaf bubblegum. It was made in Co Kildare.

Fizzle sticks , I would happily live on them forever more with a few vitamin supplements to keep me ticking over, if only they'd make them again
