Touring bottom bracket?

I am building another touring bike at the moment.

I am stuck on what bottom bracket and chainset to use and could use some advice.

The frame uses a standard british thread 1.37 x 24.

I want to use a compact chainset 50/34 and there are so many options I don't know what to choose so here are the options I have come up with so far?

    1. 7900 chainset with standard 7900 bb
    2. 7900 chainset with Hope bb
    3. 7900 chainset with phil wood external bb
    4. phil wood square taper 102mm with 10 speed campy chorus/record carbon compact chainset (chainset almost impossible to get a hold of anywhere however!)
    5. same as above with campy chorus/record bb
    6. same as above but with royce bb
    7. royce or phil wood bb with sugino compact chainset

I want to stay away from the 10 speed ultra torque chorus/record and Fulcrum RS/RRS as I have that on 2 racing bikes and it is not very reliable! Great for racing but not good for touring.

I have used 6700 compact with 7900 bb for touring before and it was perfect! Super stiff and fantastic shifting so I am reluctant to move from Shimano.

Must be 10 speed also and money isn't really a problem.

Lots of options there so any advice would be appreciated.

Not sure about the chainset, but definitely go for the Hope bb. If they're anything like their hubs then you won't have any problems in that department.

Hope stuff is excellent, couldn't agree more! Plus I can get it from CRC to which is a lot more than can be said about the other stuff mentioned.

CRC. ... Central Remedial Clinic are leaking bottom brackets too? (From some sort of 'specialised' wheel chair, perhaps?)

Why use Shimano 7900? is it not a bit over the top for touring? I thought it would not have the longevity of the more workaday members of the Shimano family ie 105 and maybe even Tiagra. Dont get me wrong, I have a Dura Ace chainset and think its the biz, but I dont use it when commuting.

If you're looking at square taper or Isis then maybe the SKF BRC/BRI 600
10 yr or 100,000km warranty. Assuming reliability is you're goal.

I was going to use the frame for Audax riding so I thought a high end chainset would be ideal but maybe I should stick with the 6700 for audax riding and change to a 105 for touring. That would allow me to keep the same bb. Maybe I should just stick with 6700 for both?

Those SKF bottom brackets are the business apparently but where do I get one? Plus does it come in 102mm instead of the 107mm as listed?

You can get SKF bbs from www.hibike.com somewhere in Sweden I think. Compass bikes in the US do them too but they may not post to here.
You could always try asking the guys at SKF (www.skf.com I think). I'm not sure if they'll sell 'em direct but they might be some help.
If you find out anything then please let us know, if I get some cash together I'd like one too :)

Don't forget to try Chris King. Real quality components

Buy this from CRC for 37e, 48x34 compact, comes with bb. Better ratio for touring, and if you're actually touring rather than just audaxing then you can afford to buy more than a few spare GXP bbs as replacements. That said if you're looking at phil wood, royce, record and shimano 7900 parts then money isn't an issue and you could just hail a taxi if you get stuck :P

    102mm Phil Wood here http://www.totalcycling.com/a-z/bottom_brackets/bottom_brackets_road/BB_PHIL_STAINLESS_ISO.html

White Industries also do great square taper bb's

SKF is just as good but not as 'boutique' since it's just a bearing company, but one of the best bearing companies out there

Thanks for all the input everyone but just to write that I am sticking with a 6700 chainset (new one) but using a hope bottom bracket instead of a 7900 one. Should do the job.
