So my car was kinda chugging along a bit today and then the dreaded engine light came on :( I know I need to bring it to a garage to get it plugged in to find out exactly what's wrong but was wondering could anyone on here give me some advice??? I'm staying in the artane area in Dublin but live down the country and I'm afraid to drive it too far. Don't wanna bring it to ford cuz they ripped me off the last two times I was there (car was dropped off to be fixed and came out with more things wrong with it than when it was dropped off!!!!) and can't really afford it either.
I heard that there is some handheld thing u can plug into ur car to find out what exactly the problem is..? Anyone knw anything about that? Any help would be really appreciated :(

My car is a 05 fiesta steel

You need a decent local mechanic. Whereabouts are you?

You need an OBD II reader, Maybe someone on here might have one to lend you, takes less than 5 mins to scan.
An independent garage would be much cheaper than ford if you do have to bring it to the garage.

I can probably get a lend of one tomorrow evening if your still stuck

If you're still stuck I'm near enough to Artane with an OBD2 reader that could pull a code.

1.25 petrol? could well be a fried coil pack...easy quick DIY fix if it is.

You know, sometimes main dealers diagnose a fix and fix only what's needed. I don't get this assumption that you'll be fleeced every time you visit one. We've had bad experiences diagnosing problems in Mrs Derps last car, a Peugeot, but I can't say for sure that anyone other than the main dealer in that instance would have done any better.

For what it's worth, I used Harmonstown Ford (very close to you) for years, servicing a Focus and a Volvo s40 through about 60,000km each and I've never had any complaints about them.
