Anyone own one of these, they are coming into budget and am thinking about a 03/04 one, whats the leg room like in the back.

Should I be concerned about high mileage on the diesel, any alternatives, I think the allroad of similar years looks fairly dated and are fairly soft in comparison, but wouldn't rule one out.

On the plus side, they're a lovely place to sit. On the minus side, they handle like a boat and the AWD isn't the best. I did all the homework myself a few years back and ended up with a Forester XT - it's not as well finished but it's faster, better across a muddy field, and more reliable. Mind if you're doing big miles then the fuel consumption will hurt.

Yeah I think the subaru would be fairly tight in the back and lack of diesel in this price range would put me off, unless it was already converted to lpg.

The Subaru is a bit tight in the back - it's a slightly smaller car inside than its appearance would suggest. Another option might be a Skoda Octavia Scout? One other thing - there's also a Volvo V70 AWD, although they're thin on the ground.

yeah i have a thing for the volvo's at the moment, and with the two dawgs is looking like an estate something or other, AWD etc not essential but would be nice to get one with it working... another would be a 02-03 E220 estate but again very thin on the ground here.

    This would be perfect.

I know exactly what you mean about the Volvo - there's a real feel good about them, but they just smell a bit money pit to me. How about a Legacy?

yep, they are full of horror story's esp the gear box on the v70 going and a 5k sterling price tag on replacement.

    But look at it...

With the XC90 having the 3rd row of seats, the leg room in the 2nd row isn't as great as it is in the V70/XC70. If you don't need the 7 seats, then the XC70 is probably the better option.

Wouldn't be too concerned about high mileage on a D5, as long as it's got the relevant history to back it up. We've had D5's back with over 300,000km and still pulling like a train.

We had an 05 XC70 on Fleet. Needed brake assist service at 80,000km. Clutch and slave cylinder were replaced at 120k, but this was used for towing a big ass boat, so to be expected at some point. Anti Skid, rear wheel bearing, brake hoses done at 127k.

Came back at 135k and sold to another customer, so we're still maintaining it. 155k last June is the last record I can see, but apart from the issues above it's only servicing, headlight bulbs (quite a few) and tyres.
