replacing chainring and cassettes?

Bit of a rookie question, I've got a trek hybrid 7.1fx from 2008 ish. I've done a good bit of commuting on it and I've noticed wear on the teeth of the chainrings and cassette.

My question is can I replace it with Shimano parts that might not match the original?

As long as the cassette is Shimano/SRAM compatible then you can fit any make/brand you wish but make sure the the ratios are within the range that your rear derailleur takes.

Same goes for front chain rings, if the PCD of the rings is the same and ratios are within range of the original then you simply swap them over.

Life will be that tiny bit easier if you can get a chainring with same large ring size as then you won't need to adjust your front derailleur height.

As long as your front derailleur is band-on or braze-on with some vertical adjustment then you'll be fine anyway.

Obviously you will need to change your chain as well, as everything wears together, and once a chain/cassette/rings wear beyond certain amounts, the chain will jump when pressure is applied to the pedals if some of the setup is old and some is new.

From memory, the 7.1 has a single-piece front chainset, so it isn't possible to replace individual chainrings, but a replacement chainset of the same type will probably be much the same price as some individual chainrings, and there'll be no PCD issues.

It's also a 7-speed freewheel rather than cassette. I'd be surprised if the chainrings need replacing. I would think you would likely get away with just freewheel and chain.
