TV gone bananas

Ok, I have an old-fashioned (i.e. a foot deep!) portable tv in my bedroom. I was watching a programme I'd recorded using my Saorview box at the weekend when I heard a bang and the picture went but I still had sound. Oh well, I thought, tv has died, probably about time. The power button on the tv kept flashing so I just switched it off. Next morning, I decided to turn it on again and it worked fine - until I watched another recorded programme, then the same thing happened but when I used the button to switch the tv off and on again, it was fine.

I'm puzzled - if it's a recording on the Saorview box is causing the issue - how is it affecting the TV and not the Saorview box? I've checked for loose connections, etc.

Also, if I do end up having to replace the tv, do the new tvs with built-in saorview have the same recording facility as the Saorview box? Mine is a Walker box and I record A LOT onto a memory stick stuck in the back of it.

Sounds like EHT flashover. Could only be a coincidence when its happening

If you're feeling confident to look inside the TV it might be just due to a build up of grime surrounding the EHT connection on the side of the Cathode Ray Tube - this is the single wire with thick insulation. If there is grime surrounding the connection to the tube just clean it away with a cloth.
This can easily buildup if TV was used in a kitchen.

Obviously disconnect TV from mains and also everything else.
The EHT can remain charged for ages (when TV off) and is like a shock from an electric fence if it discharges through you. So avoid touching the connection and keep your other hand away from the TV whilst cleaning around EHT connection on tube

    Confident or not...

Unless you are technically qualified and fully aware of the dangers of CRT operation, please do not go opening the TV, and certainly do not go anywhere near the EHT components.

If you don't know what any of the above terms mean, or the safety implications of working around them, then either bring the TV for possible repair, or else treat yourself to a new set (probably best option).

Without making judgments and purely in the interests of safety, I would suggest that if you found it necessary to post the original query on a public forum, you should not attempt a DIY repair, nor should it have been suggested to you.

A shock from an EHT lead/connection can be much more serious than a shock from an electric fence.
    Safety first... at all times.
