Not so simple one. If turning right onto the quay from Eglington Street, and if you are in the middle lane, which lane do you enter after turning right. Ditto if you are in the right most lane.

I was in the middle lane last night and went to the middle lane after turning the corner. The guy in the car inside me nearly went crazy at me. He eventually end up in the left most lane to turn left (to go down by Jurys Inn).

This is very confusion as essentially, 2 lanes turn into 3 and no one really knows which lanes feed into which ones.

2 lanes in to three...middle lane to LH or middle....RH to middle or RH. However, in practise at that junction, nearly no one would go into the RH lane , so the sensible thing would be to do what you didn't. In practise, middle lane should go to LH, and RH to middle.

I tend to use the middle lane there to go left, and stay in the lanes that would bring you up onto Parnell place. The left lane then would be for going down past the cop shop and the fire station. Thats how I do it.

Though I think if i were turning right there i'd go into the leftmost lane on Alber Quay from the middle lane, and leave the other two for the people in the right lane. as they will be going right or straight on at the next junction

There are people that operate differently there though, and are very quick to start roaring and bawling rather than just accept the fact someone is a bit confused and wave them on,especially during the summer when there would be a lot of tourists around,i'm betting that different brand sat navs even vary what lane they advise on taking there

I dislike these junctions where you turn from the middle lane anyway

What about when you are turning left from penrose quay onto the brian boru bridge and you are in the middle lane - the left lane should only use the left lane, is that correct? So the middle lane can either go on the middle lane or far right lane on the bridge?

    Sorry for hijacking.

I see you're logic. The only time you'd possibly do a double right would be if you wanted to access Jewtown after coming in the South Link Road or coming from Anglesea Street.

Would be nice if Cork City Council would paint a few white lines through the box junction to clarify all of this though. The driver on the right of me actually wanted to get into lane 1 after the turn. Not sure he understood that my lane could turn right also.

The same should be done coming from the Bus Station side also.

PENROSE QUAY looks to me as if it's only the left lane that should be turning left so you can to either lane on the bridge. Far right on the bridge and you'll meet people coming the other way!

He was totally wrong to want to do that! it's a bit of a free for all at times. you weren't wrong either btw...

No I'm talking about the bridge near the bus station - that's one way

looking on google maps the middle lane on the quay is arrowed for straight on only so you shouldn't be turning on to the bridge from the middle lane

That is definitely not the case - there is a left arrow. I have done it numerous times as have other cars.

well in that case. left lane is for left and middle....middle lane is for middle and right. It's not cut and dried, depends who gets there first

Depends who gets there first....! that's an interesting way of looking at it ;)

I've had it happen many a time where the cars in the left lane just swing into the middle lane on the bridge and blow you out of it if you are turning into the middle lane also....

well they are entitled to do that if the way is clear. If you got there first, then they can't do it.

With most of these junctions, a kind of concensus builds up as to what lane should do what and it's only strangers usually who do different

The middle lane becomes the next lane over or the far left lane for turning left only over the bridge. The right hand lane is for either the middle or right hand lane and is for turning right only from the far right lane and going straight on or left from middle lane

He was in the wrong, he should have been behind you and both of should have ended up in the left and middle lanes and gone over the bridge with no further lane changing.
