Anyone Else Hate The News?

I'm so sick of the news. Radio, T.V, paper, anything. Everything has to be negative, it's sickening. Nelson Mandela's funeral on and then they ruin it by changing it to 15 minutes of feckin' cricket fixing. A guy who had the biggest impact on black people at that time and they change it to cricket? Get out, who the hell cares? I watched something on the likes of this ages ago. Supposedly people will watch more negative for some reason and so the media takes advantage of this. To be honest, the news nowadays just depresses me so I never really do look at it anymore. Ugh.

    Ah, that felt good.

Nancy: [watching the news] Bad news, bad news, bad news. Jesus, Jeremy, one bus crash. What about all the buses that made it safely to their destinations, huh?
Jeremy Usborne: Yeah! Yeah, this is such bull****.
Mark Corrigan: Yes, I suppose the news should just be a dispassionate list of all the events that have occurred the world over during the day. That would be good. Except of course, it would take FOREVER

Last time I heard the news he was still dead, what more of an update do you want?

Only short of giving us a rate of decomposition on the body.

I like when the piece of footage they have lined up doesn't play and the newsreader stares blankly into the camera.

I don't think we've heard the end of the death of this Mandela guy.

Tonight's News: There is no news, so we sent one of the Gaelgoirie sounding reporters down the country to talk at a woman who gave up eating oranges in support of Mandela.

The word 'new' is derived from 'news'.

    Factoid.

I gave up watching up watching / reading the news. Too much negativity. It was literally contributing to my depression. I was told by my doc to keep away from it all. I also gave up reading certain forums on boards <cough>soccer<cough> as there's too much aggression and negativity... and guess what? I feel all the better for it. :)

News isn't all negative. Sure every few days they announce that unemployment is down, and that x number of jobs have been created.

And you don't hear nearly as much that twice as many people have emigrated or been let go.

    So that's something positive.

    In lighter news, clowns.

That's a common myth. It's an acronym for 'Not Everyone Wears Socks'.

A "factoid" is something that is not necessarily true. Fact.

I'll tell you something else. I once had a news editor who would frequently tell us to jazz up a story and "make it sexy".

I could never quite bring myself to announce an erotic massacre in Bosnia or a sensual bombing in the North :(

    Wrong.
In Roman times there was a popular newspaper called 'North, south, east and west'. People began referring to Nsew. 'Got any nsew? they'd say. This evolved over time into news.

All paper or just the NEWS_paper?
I'd feel a little hard done by if there was no news on my newspaper.

If you want a paper without news you could always buy a tabloid.:D

Watch the news maybe every 10 days - unless something major happens. I discovered years ago that nothing newsworthy really impacts my life.
These days the hype that is built into the news items is a big turn off.

I'm not a depressive (unless its cloudy for more than 3 days in a row!) but I also tend to avoid regular tv news. The only stuff I'll stick with is Channel 4 News or Newsnight if they have a feature on something of interest.

The "breaking news" ticker-tape led 24 hour channels are pure brain rot.

ps the LFC thread is quite positive these days! (helps being 2nd in the table)

Yes i hate the news. It's always bad news and if there's ever something positive they leave to the end and talk about it for 15 seconds.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,133 ✭✭✭FloatingVoter

In todays news - Nelson Mandela showed up dead at a stadium show that Barack Obama and Bono were headlining,
In other news, my cat has gone to sleep in protest at my not cleaning the house for the last week.
Finally, Louis Walsh exclusively reveals Sharon Osborne has a Ronan Keating shaped birthmark on her left inner thigh.

And now we'll take the weather.

C'ant watch RTE six one news anymore because Sharon Ni Bheolain smacks her lips everytime before she begins a sentence, its really is a horrible sound.

C'ant listen to the wan off Newstalk who reads the news in the afternoons, her sharp inhalation of breath before she begins a sentence is also a horrible sound.

In fairness to the above women, its probally the sound persons fault.

My sister who is 13 years older than I stopped watching/listening to the News around 15 years ago.

I dislike watching the news, i'd have to admit. I find out anything i'd need to know off the internet anyways, and probably quicker considering twitter. Watching it here is just one grim story after another, i feel like i need a ****ing prozac after it half the time. We do misery well in this country in fairness.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 28,789 ✭✭✭✭ScumLord

I don't bother watching the news. If something important happens I'll hear about it somewhere. I do like technology and science news, it's always uplifting to hear about the constant updates in human understanding. Science news is nearly always presented as a progress the human species made too, so it's always got a very inclusive feel to it and that it applies to every living thing on the planet.

Marian Finucane does that all the time too. It's so loud that it sound like she's **** and picking her hole at the same time.

I think so. They also have Joe Duffy trying to correctly pronounce words with the letters "th" in them,

Needless to say the level of douche chillery rises considerably afterwards.
