There's a good selection in Dublin Goldsmiths on Talbot St. There's also a good few in Corr's Jewellers in Powerscourt. Best of luck with the search.

I saw some in john Brereton's on Capel street during the year.

The advantage of buying in a bricks and mortar shop is that you get some peace of mind, but the price reflects that. In my experience a quality jeweler will not give you a piece without a guarantee for a few months. You pay for that.
Some less reputable dealers will sell 'as seen'. Avoid like the plague. Unserviced, unguaranteed and a price to match.

Personally I buy my vintages on line, but accept that there is a gamble in that too.

Brereton's are also on the pricey side. Can't speak for the others.

Many thanks for the mention on this thread. We have a wide range of vintage watches in both our Capel Street and Grafton Street store. Please see the link below for a sample of these. Our vintage watches are fully serviced and in mint condition with a one year guarantee also.

Is there a particular model of watch you are interested in?

Depends what you define as vintage too. For some it's previously loved a few years old. Me, I get suspicious of anything that's much later than biplanes and airships. :D

If you do go further back, another option to consider for a ladies watch are vintage mens watches. Pre the 1960's men's watches were usually smaller, often much smaller than today's fashion demands, particularly dress watches.

Example; here's a 1951 Longines "tank" style watch from my stash.

    2i043tz.jpg

It's small, around 25 mm in width and 30 something mm in length. It kinda works on me because I have tiny wrists for a bloke(a modern mans watch of 40mm across looks near comical on my wrist). Even so I'd wear it rarely enough because it does look small. It would be a pretty good size for a modern ladies watch though(slap a blue or red strap on it and instant sex change).

Actually might be a another angle for watch dealers too. Smaller vintage men's watches which are usually a lot cheaper because of the size, rebranded as ladies watches for today?

Cost for one of them on ebay? Soild gold one like the above would run 3-500 quid, rolled gold/plated, closer to 2-300. Solid little movement in those too. Put it another way to get a brand new solid gold watch from a known manufacturer with an inhouse movement you'd be paying BIG bucks. And again I'll roll out my hobby horse :o:D and say IMHO vintage Longines are incredibly undervalued compared to say Omega's of the same vintage and this will change as the supply dwindles(I'm beginning to see this).

There are downsides to vintage though. they're not waterproof. Not even close. They have mechanical movements, which do need maintenance. Now this is a bonus for a lot of men, but I recall reading an interview with one of the head guys in Patek or some other big name brand and he said the reason they had some quartz watches was because women being of a more practical bent often couldn't be arsed with daily winding of a watch so they tended to choose the convenience of quartz. I gave an ex a 30's Gruen of the same kinda style as above and she loved it, but only wore it rarely as the whole winding thing was an inconvenience for her. Something to consider?

Rejoice in the awareness of feeling stupid, for that’s how you end up learning new things. If you’re not aware you’re stupid, you probably are.
