Comparing two products for pre calving, one is a bucket of lick and the other is a block which can be mounted on gates

    Make up as follows

    Block 1 BLOCK 2

    Magnesium 5% 8%
    Calcium 3.7% 3.5%
    Sodium 22% 11%
    Phosphorous 5% ---

    mg per KG

    iodine 600mg 500
    selenium 50mg 48
    cobalt 100mg 100
    copper 3500mg 2400
    zinc 3000mg 3000
    manganese 1000mg 2000

any thoughts on one having no phosphorous or any comments in general

Do you have to use licks? if not use minerals in the powder form you will have far more bang for your buck out of them and you know all cattle will be getting them as may not be the case with the licks

Have you ever tried the bullets allsure bolus guaranteed each cow gets the minerals needed and from our experience of the past three years using them about 4 retained cleanings from a 50 cow herd with very healthy looking calves dropping and better conception rates with cows the following lactation. - mind you it's a bit of a pain dosing 50 cows - but worth it in the long run,

Does that cover them or do keep buckets with them also.?

Could you use a powder instead and sprinkle on the silage daily?
    More effective and cheaper too.

The bolus are handy for timid animals like heifers but expensive

That said buckets can be very handy in certain situations like only a couple animals
I used buckets for the cows in the maternity ward and used the powder in the shed.

Both blocks look pretty similar really. Just go with the cheaper one

Are my right in thinking phos not useful for precalver but has a place post calving for cattle on a root crop?

No we give the bolus a month or two before calving they are expensive but at least you can be guaranteed the cow gets her minerals and there's no wastage just my experience that they've been successful
