Accepted job offer - then offered dream job

    So long story short.

    Did 2 interviews recently:

    Job 1 - dream job.
Job 2 - same as position I currently hold.

After 2 weeks I had heard nothing from job 1, except a email saying " we are still reviewing ....."

Went to interview for job 2 when I hadn't heard anything and 2 days later was offered the job. Handed in my notice the next day.

Job 1 have now come back and offered me the job. I'm delighted but feel terrible at having to turn down job 2.

I've never been in this situation and I guess I'm wondering how to approach this.

    Thanks in advance.

You had a job and then got two other job offers and yer bitching?!!??!!

Nah, I'm only messing. Congrats. Well done. As maneno said, if you haven't signed a contract you should be fine. It may not happen as much these days as during the boom times but it does happen. If you're feeling a bit guilty look at it this way: Now somebody who thought they had missed out on a job has gotten an offer.

No contract signed still working out my notice period. Just a verbal acceptance.

I just feel really bad letting them down and not looking forward to that conversation at all.

    Thanks !

Don't feel bad, the job market is so competitive these days that if you don't accept, I'm sure they have some other great candidates waiting in the wings!

Accept your dream job and don't feel bad, after all it is so close to the time of the offer that things change.

However, I would caution anyone to only hand in their notice when they have an offer and contract in writing, and not before. Things change at companies, too, a job offer may fail to be approved by finance etc.

Look after number one (you) because in any job you are just a number on the payroll, so don't feel bad
    for taking the dream job.
hope all goes well in your new position.

This happens more often than you might think - it's rare enough to find a candidate that isn't interviewing for more than one job, so it's always a risk that this can happen.

Resigning your current job without a contract was a little brave by the way!

Also, OP, sounds like they'll have a bit of time once you tell them to fill the position before the start date, so don't fret.

An acquaintance of mine accepted a position this summer and two day before she was to start, got a job offer for her preferred choice. She wasn't really wrong to take the job she wanted, but she would have left the other employers scrambling a bit!

    Thanks everyone for your input.

Made the call and have never felt so bad. It honestly felt terrible. :(

Starting new job on Monday so fingers crossed it was worth it.

Don't feel bad, it was a minor inconvenience for them at best, They'll have people crawling up the gutters to fill the now vacated position!

    Congrats again!

I've signed a contract before and then gone and done something else...

Businesses can look after themselves, I have to look after me.

Job 1 - absolutely. Don't worry about Job 2 they won't take it personally, just explain nicely and thank them for the opportunity.

Hey, Kaylami, I'll take the job if you don't want it! :D:p

you never heard of text messages, no?

As a general note for general reference, Do NOT do this - it is extremely unprofessional!

Most places don't look to kindly to people texting their manager to say they're sick either.
