An one out there using (legally) a heavy pistol calibre lever action or other action type rifle for deer stalking ? something like the .44 mag or .454 etc ? These make the minimum energy for a licence easily.

I have to ask 'Why'. There's always posts bout minimum calibre to shoot deer but why when you cen use the proper cal.
Are there any .454 rifles licensed here? I've shot the revolver

Well friend uses a 30.30 lever action with I think 18" barrel. Lovely woodland stalking rifle.

Ronan - The Buffalo Bullets 340gr LFN +P+ rated ammunition, at 1649ft lb around 1600 fps might do the job, however,

    1. How near are you going to get to a deer to shoot it with this maximum amount of m/e?

    2. More to the point, what is the minimum requirement for deer in RoI - for sure, no pistol calibre .44cal cartridge is going to make the figures ANYWHERE in UK. That bullet loses m/e like a bad investment

    3. Where are you going to get the ammunition?

As for a .454 Casull-calibre rifle/carbine, the next one I see with be the very first one I've ever see, but I'm happy to be informed to the contrary.

I got told last year that they were not giving out any Deer Licences for any .40 Calibers, I emailed them back asking if there was any reason to this and never got a reply back, if anyone else wants to email them and ask that would be good, I think I have well and truly worn out my welcome there this year ;)

Yup, nothing like a two-way dialog, and this is nothing like a two-way dialog.

    So, no .444 Marlin?

    No 45-70 Govt?

    Both renowned as deer-slayers elsewhere.

Pistol-calibre .44/45ss are usually found in Brush and woodlland-style of shooting at very close range - do you do any of that style of shooting in the RoI?

Yup, the thutty-thutty is THE definitive short-range brush calibre, having been designed ZACKLY for that purpose back then. I often get the use of a Savage Model 99 made in 1903 - a really beautiful little rifle and a winner at 75-100 yards for sure.

I accept the point that a large caliber pistol cartridge rifle is powerful and will do the job but for woodland close range it still won't hold a patch on a relatively short barrel semi-auto shottie loaded with slugs ( neither will be an easy matter to get sorted in this county me thinks ). Or tac's 30.30 for that matter :)

No .450 SOCOM then either?? Sounds to me like somone in the dept is talking out their posteriors again.
Yup,I do have some dense brush ,woodland clearing, brush type shooting here betimes,so if it was available a 450 SOCOM on an AR platform would be handy alright.

Is that comment aimed at me?

My comment was serious, given that there are, no doubt, a number of Marlin underlever rifles or carbines in the RoI, if we are to believe the posters on these pages.

Also given the authorities' present stance on the 'military appearance' of certain styles of long arm, your choice seems to be far more wishful thinking than mine.

Why not go the whole hog and get a .50 beowolf :D. Federal do a .44 deer load that makes 1,650 ft/lbs from an 18 inch barrel, slightly under our minimum. The .454 casull makes well over 2,000 in the same length barrel.
I seen more than one .45-70 lever action and ditto for the .30-30.

There y'are then. There ARE such things in Ireland del Sud. All that's needed now is a convincing argument to sway the local super.

Just don't have the one that thinks that guns need to be inaccurate to be of any allowed in civilian paws.

I'd say you could get one if you are willing to fight for it, but a 30.30 lever might be a nicer option for stalking. The calibre is unrestricted so should be easy to license. I have a nice pre '64 Winchester 30-30 and had no problem getting it as a second stalking rifle. Ammo can be hard to come by, but if you order in bulk you can get it.
If you do go down that road, try get an older lever action, either a winchester or Marlin. The older models (pre 64 in the case of winchester) are finished to a much higher standard.
