Student Travelcard / Leap card question

    Hi folks, a quick question
I've acquired a student travel card (the joys of taking up the actuarial exams again) and just would like to know if it's possible to have both a purse and a 30-day rambler card loaded on it at the same time (i.e. the odd day I might get a lift into town and will only need one bus journey to get home, whereas other days I might need to get two or three buses).
Presumably if I had both on the card, using the validator on the right would activate / validate the rambler portion of the card, whilst going up to the driver would use some of the credit? Does the presence of a rambler ticket on the card prevent the validator just taking the max fare from the purse?

(I did a bit of digging before posting but what I found in relation to the student travel / leap is a bit contradictory and I get the impression some of the info I've read is out of date)

    Thanks in advance

You are spot on - you can use the card as both an epurse and a rambler.

Different (lower) capping rates apply to the epurse for the student travelcard.

And yes - you would use it exactly as you outline above!

All well comprehended Yakuza, with one important exception...IF the first use on any day is after 20.00 hrs,the remote validator will NOT deduct a Rambler Day,but will deduct a €2.50 Flat Fare...If there is insufficient credit for this, the Rambler Day WILL then be deducted...This is why they call it Smart Card Ticketing ! :D

Just wondering, if I have reached the daily/weekly cap on my leap card but I also have a rambler ticket, is the right-hand validator smart enough to recognize that I've reached the cap and not deduct a day from the rambler?

    Good question Lifelike.

Although I have not come up against such a scenario,I know it is lying in the long-grass just waiting to spring !

I rather suspect it will depend upon which product you select for first use on the day.

If you have a Rambler product on the card and you use the remote validator on your first journey, then that is your selected product for the remainder of the day.

However,if you do not wish to deduct a Rambler Day,and you approach the Busdriver to have a a manual deduction from your Purse Credit, then I would suggest your Leapcard will remain in Purse mode and thus recognize the appropriate daily/weekly cap.

Thats not a definitive however,so I'm open to correction on it

Has anyone had any luck getting the Rambler put on the Leap card? I asked for it in a busy city centre shop 2 weeks ago and the man working there didn't have a clue what I was talking about. In the end I had to buy the Rambler paper ticket.

I'm seeing plenty of them now, however Maverick's experience has also been repeated to me by Leap Card holders, which again, sadly, points to a significant problem with Payzone's infrastructure...The NTA really need to get on top of this before it alienates more of their current customers ?

I'm asking here because it is somewhat related: I was made aware that the integrated Student Travel Leap Card, that the OP talked about, enables lower leap card fares. This was conveyed to me by a staff member at a student shop location.

Eg. If I pay €2.10 on the standard Leap Card on Dublin Bus, I'm entitled to pay a lower fare than this if I use a Student Travel Leap Card, right? I can't find pricing anywhere.

I've not interest in getting a Student Travel Card for the rambler facility, as it doesn't save me any money really, and seems to be overkill?

Sorry to crash the thread, but my question seems relevant and not worth starting a new thread for.

You don't pay lower individual fares - there is a lower daily and weekly (Monday/Sunday) cap. In other words, you pay normal fares until you reach the cap and then any additional trips are free.

The daily caps for students are:
    Dublin Bus - €5
    LUAS - €5
    Irish Rail - €6.90

The weekly caps for students are:
    Dublin Bus - €20
    LUAS - €18
    Irish Rail - €27

    Thank you, Lxflyer.

Do you know if this would the Nightlink?

Yes the epurse does work on Nitelink - fare would be €5.

Note, however, that the Nitelink fare does not count towards the daily cap.

A maximum of €2.50 of the Nitelink fare does count towards the daily cap.

one shop I went in to had never heard of the concept of rambler on leap but in fairness was enthusiastic enough to check and found it on the system easily enough. alas though they refused to take a card payment for a 30 rambler on leap though!
"No card payments for leap" I was told.
    My hunt continues...

Yet more evidence that the NTA nees to revisit it's commercial arrangement with Payzone IMMEDIATELY :(

Didn't want to start new thread for similar query. i see that the Dublin Bus student 30 day rambler is increasing in price from €91.50 to €100 from January 2014 (as no date given i assume it's from Jan 1st) http://www.dublinbus.ie/en/News-Centre/General-News/Revised-cash-leap-and-pre-paid-fares-from-December-1st-2013/
My daughter wont be back to Dublin until Jan 6th. Is it ok to buy rambler online here http://www.ticketmaster.ie/event/18004991D1717F6C?camefrom=CFC_IE_AFF_DUBLINBUS&brand=ie_bus before jan 1st?
If so, can you only buy one at a time?
