Skateboarding on a cycle track...

<snip> I passed a girl cruising along in the clontarf promenade in the cycle lane. No probs, she was making good progress I overtook, said hello and headed on, but a fellow cyclist took exception and buzzed her by a millimetre and told her where to go.

I see nothing wrong with it. IMO, the other cyclist was a twat!

The worst thing to have in a cycle lane is a ninja going in the opposite direction. Nearly hit some gob ****e last week.

I'm intrigued by this charter breaching comparison.

All it takes is the skateboarder to flick left or right without warning and the cyclist is into the wall or off onto the rocks..

    I don't see a skateboarding track..

And the skateboarder has a lot more control than a cyclist..

Skateboarders and rollerbladers tend to veer more when they push, so they're a little bit more unpredictable if they're to share a very narrow lane. The cyclist would also be more likely to receive worse injuries to both their body and much more expensive bicycle.

Also, if a skateboarder or rollerblader overtakes you while you are cycling you should probably hang up your cycling shoes..

Funny how only cyclists have rights and everyone else just obligations.

Haha that's so funny actually, think I might walk into town along middle lane of the main road!

I dis-agree. though I do agree that if a cyclist looses control, the potential injuries will be greater for the cyclist as he/she will most likely be travelling faster.

Just treat a skateboarder as you would an OAP on a bike...give them plenty of room.

I wonder how he'd react if a motorist had pulled a "punishment pass" on him.

Sorry. Just a bit of Friday humour. No offence meant.

So cruising on a board is ok to most of us? I may take out the Santa Cruise go a downwind coastal ride on the coast. Say hello if you see me.

I'd regard that track (and the Phoenix Park tracks) as amenities - they're not "Red Route 1" express cycleways, nor are the velodromes or TT tracks.

Relax and enjoy the facility - when you get to Fairview you'll have plenty to whinge about then ;)

If he was wearing a helmet cam, probably post the video on youtube and look for sympathy i suppose.

Can we all just get along?

Can't we all just get a longboard?

Skateboard's nothing. Last night, I had to get around a wheelchair being pushed at a snail's pace. I'd say they were coming from the pub. Thing is, the wheelchair is nearly as wide as the cycle lane. Tough to get past. I had to really think about how I felt about it. It is a wheeled vehicle, even if the guy did have a chauffeur.

    Fix that for ya :)

'Tough' to get past a wheelchair being pushed at a 'snail's pace'?

Even if it was the width of the cycle track I can think of a lot more tougher things in cycling!

I came up behind a guy on a skateboard on the Phoenix Park track once. I went to pass him, he spotted me and proceeded to fall off the board, and then apologised to me. I didn't think I was that scary :o

On the same track, different day, I got slightly hypnotised watching a rollerblader making her way rhythmically along. I don't know if she would have heard me anyway as she had earbuds in.

I agree with Jawgap, those paths are there to enjoy the scenery. If I can get a good pace going, great, but if there are pedestrians/rollerbladers/etc. I slow down for a bit. If I'm in a hurry, I say excuse me or use the road.

I used to be bothered about walkers/whatever/non-cyclists using the cycle tracks. Now I don't care. Negotiate them safely, carry on with your journey, enjoy the rest of your day.

Good attitude Raam, Rubertfoster and other like minded cyclists.. Like driving a car on a road I guess? You're gonna meet tractors, cyclists, forklifts, slow drivers, trucks with heavy loads etc... live and let live.

That's not really a valid comparison as those vehicles are not restricted from using public roads (providing their affairs are in order) despite the fact that they may be slow moving. On the other hand, some cycle tracks have "No Pedestrians" signage.

    Ok dude... my bad.

Thanks for the input everyone, have a good weekend on one, two, three or whatever amount of wheels you're on. Stay classy.

I think it's important to be tolerant on tracks like the one up to Howth. In fairness to skateboarders they're going faster than pedestrians. It's really out of order to 'buzz' them as mentioned above. As someone else said, I'd be annoyed/am annoyed when car drivers do this so same rules apply.

When passing skateboarders/roller bladers on Howth lane Just slow down a bit tell them you're passing and leave it at that. The only thing that annoys me about that lane is people walking dogs on elastic leads on the bike, as it's hard to get around them. Even worse if they have head phones in and can't hear you call them.

    Wheelchair legal in cycle track.

Skateboard not (not saying buzzing anybody is a good idea!).
