With so many companies not even responding to applications, would it be a good or a bad thing to call a couple of days later to follow up on the application ?

Personally for me I find it really irritating. As you say, companies receive loads of applications for jobs. It is time consuming enough to go through all the applications without someone ringing you to check if you got it. I have had a few of these and I find them really irritating - I have enough to be doing. If your application is good enough I will be in touch with you.

The only exception is with recruitment agencies. But if you apply directly to a company I would say spend the time fine tuning your application, have a CV that stands out and a cover letter that sells you and then leave it in the hands of fate.

A couple of days is way too soon. And often if you look at the job advert, they'll say "If you don't hear from us by X date" you haven't been successful. Ignoring or not noticing that shows a lack of observation skills. Not great!
