Sky Multiroom, but no phone line

Anyone else in this situation? I am on a UPC MMDS subscription, as I am in a rural area, and that is the only multichannel option open to me, besides Sky.

I have a multiroom setup with UPC. Thing is, when I look at what is available on MMDS, versus what is available with Sky at the same price, I would like to switch.

However, I would still like to keep the multi room option. However, Sky tell me that this is not possiblemultiroom setup with UPC. Thing is, when I look at what is available on MMDS, versus what is available with Sky at the same price, I would like to switch.

However, I would still like to keep the multi room option. However, Sky tell me that this is not possible without a phone line. I have no intention of getting a phone line in here.

Does anyone here have Sky Multi-room without having a phone line? If so, how did you accomplish such a feat? without a phone line. I have no intention of getting a phone line in here.

I'm fairly certain you can't as you will read here unless you pay for separate boxes...

Same situation here. It is derisory that Sky are so slow to keep up with technology. As an alternative to a landline, they should be able to interrogate boxes via the customer's internet connection to verify they are at the same location (at least not shipped off to Spain). Either that or a watchdog app between boxes that would shutdown if they are not on the same local network.

But the problem is the broadband comes in over the phone line?

I've been getting away with it for years.

Broadband is not exclusive to landlines. We can't physically get a landline, so our BB is via a Fixed Wireless network.

To say very soon is not correct, sky have not informed anyone of their intention of relating on the phoneline for multiroom option.

Reason is simple, with a phoneline you can order direct from your armchair and therefore less call staff required, kids can also play games charged at 50cent a min raking up a nice profit for sky. They can also keep track of the boxes by doing a callback to see are both boxes connected to the same line.

There are ip configs currently in development, but again this does not mean sky will use them and even if they do they will be expensive I reckonhttp://www.ses.com/4233325/news/2013/15044211. There are wireless card sharing devices around for yrs that could pair a second card in range of the first but again sky refuse to utilise this.

another useless comment, you shouldnt have even bothered to come back to the thread if that is all you are going to say.

anyway the time frame is not so important, tell us how it will work

Must be a slow night, yes it will work over BB and how it works shouldn't be a question for anyone aslong as you have BB you can get MR without a phone line.

Lots of people have multiroom without the phoneline its getting it in is the problem, both cards has to be now activated with an active phoneline and if you get caught with boxes no connected your subscription will double every month until you rectify it, just cause you havent got caught yet doesnt mean you wont.

I have sky multiroom and sky also told me i would need a phoneline for my two boxes
but when the installer came to my house we got chatting for a bit and he told me he
will set them up without the phone lines all of there technicians carry hand held devices that
will set up the boxes for you without being connected to the phone line i have sky the past two years
and everything is still fine without my phone lines connected.

That's the case you will never have trouble without having the phone line connected. But getting the multiroom without a phone line takes a bit of work. But it can be done

As I said it can be done only if u activate them with a telephone line somewhere that they work....but that doesnt mean u will get away with it forever.

I'd say 60% of new mr customers don't have a phone line and never had its the door to door salesman who get you the multiroom without a phone line

i think if anyone who doesnt have a phone line was to call up on Dec 18th they would find not having a phoneline isnt an issue anymore..

i think if anyone who doesnt have a phone line was to call up on Dec 18th they would find not having a phoneline isnt an issue anymore..

A- It takes 5-10 working days to get the cards sent from Scotland to Ireland on an average week so u can forget about getting sky from here on in....and

B- Its in their terms and conditions for Multiroom that you have to have a line, sky now record your voice when signing up for sky and will ring the landline no u provide when ordering multiroom. If they get no answer on a number of occasions they will not issue the cards. This is all part of the new security systems in place...so if you dont know what your talking about and as I already pointed out to u already just cause you got away with not having a phone line so far does not mean you will continue to do so inevitably.

I get a number of calls each week from people who receive letters from sky that their boxes are not connected to an active line and who's bills are doubled as a result due to the exact procedure you are referring to.

I'm self employed tv and broadband engineer in the Limerick area, and an authorised Sky Agent so I can tell you exactly how it is, all Cards are shipped from Scotland and not the republic. It takes a few days to ship as Sky do a full credit check on you and details are now shared for some time between UPC and Sky to stop people racking up a bill with one and then jumping ship.

They now record your voice when setting up an account and you must pick a pin number which the engiiner or sometimes the person who signed up for the account must say again on the day of the install to stop people opening and closing and signing up using different bank accounts, it is rare any cards would ship before 5-days unless you are lucky

No is is not I should know as I have had to turn away countless peoples accounts that have been bounced as a result and I'm sure a lot of other installers will tell you the same. Also due to some addresses been blacklisted usually a rented house where 2 or 3 bad tenants racked up a bill in a row,

Could you not be creative with their names and addresses bank details etc?

That would be due to credit rating highlighting issues after the credit check not detail sharing. Detail sharing would be a major breach of data protection by both companies!

So, finally Sky boxes catch up with the 21st century.

Though oddly enough, they say to connect multiroom boxes to your home broadband network "where possible".

A change for the good, almost enough to persuade me to sign up.

Has four boxes always been the limit for multi-room?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 168 ✭✭Scartbeg

Has four boxes always been the limit for multi-room?

    That's 4 Sky+ boxes (2 feeds each) or 8 Standard boxes.
They seem to base this on a max of 8 feeds from an Octal LNB

No reason why they couldn't use a Quattro with multiswitch to provide more than 8 feeds, if you really wanted to pay for them.

Also coming up, as linked above, are LNBs with native IP capability. Essentially putting the receiver in the LNB with a small media server to stream up to 8 channels at once over your LAN. Wouldn't be rushing out to buy one though.

@Heisenberg1: Presumably, it doesn't have to be Sky's broadband - it can be anyone's broadband - including upc and fixed wireless providers and also, 3g midband providers such as Three.

This paves the way for whole home dvr setup in main room with Multiscreen boxes working off ip only with no sat feed to a multiscreen box necessary.
